Not a bad hike for both a Firetower and Fulton Chain challenge. Trail was a bit slick in rocky spots with limited areas of mud, both of with should be expected post rainy spring/summer. Tower is in great condition and views are lovely from the top. My 4.5 and I handled it with little issues. The negatives: lots of people (this is a popular hike, most likely due to proximity to Old Forge), and not everyone is a PIPO. My tally for the hike: Three bottles, a few odds and ends of plastic wrappers and a 36B bra. people should know better. A final good note: Both 4.5 and myself have completed the Fulton Chain Challenge and will now look to other challenges. Likely next is the Tupper Lake Triad.

As some others have said, trail is steep and currently muddy. Markers are fairly well placed, but path is quite wide. I would not do this peak again with my 4.75yr strapped to my back. Bad call on my part (extra 48lbs on my back). Pushing for two today, should have called it when he got tired. Made it, 4.75 loved the ride up and the views. No one else on the trail, lot was empty when we headed up and still when we returned. Couldn't locate the USGS marker, was a bit disappointed in that. Also of interest, the trailhead sign is missing. Peak two for the Fulton Chain.

Pretty nice climb. For as little elevation that you gain, there are some really nice views. The longer southern approach would probably be good if you had kids with. My 4.75yrs made it up the north approach (his call, after being asked if he wanted the longer, easier path or the shorter, more difficult) with 8lbs in pack. After the accent, I would not have wanted to return by the North. We took the South down. Other then seeing some deer that promptly fled, no one and nothing on the path. Peak one for Fulton Chain. Also of note, first peak for my 4.75 as well.

The drive into the trailhead is almost a difficult as the hike itself! Really nice hike, at least in good weather. The tower would be better if one could get the whole way up. That being said, what you can access gives some nice views. As stated in other reviews, the wind does whip around a bit on the tower.

My brother, nephew and I completed this trek. The student guide at the peak was nice enough to take some time to talk with my nephew about the mountain while my brother and I climbed the tower. Some nice views!

This was the first mountain trail that I ever completed, back in the late '80's. The trail was much different in those days, as the difficulty has much increased over the years. We last completed this hike in 2014, and while it took a bit of time it was still well worth the trip.
