Evelyn Wilbur reviewed Fletcher Canyon Trail

Starts out as a fairly easy trail, but toward the end of the trail there are a lot of off-shoots that can cause minor confusion. Plenty of shade, and lower elevation than other trails in the area.

Evelyn Wilbur reviewed Thunderbird Park Three Peaks Loop Trail

I like to park somewhere in the lots west of 59th Avenue, then proceed east across the bridge over 59th to complete the three peaks, east to west. All of these trails have abundant loose rubble which is hard on the feet in addition to being a slip and stumble factor. However, nice views at each peak, decent hike for being in town, and reasonably good parking.

Evelyn Wilbur reviewed Gateway, Bell Pass, and Windgate Loop Trail

Per the Preserve docents and the info on display at Gateway trail head, this is a 9.5 mile loop. I went counter-clockwise to get more incline in the first part of my hike. Recent storms have washed a lot of dirt and sand off the trails. I prefer that as it leaves a more packed trail, although somewhat more rocky, and currently, footing is solid. Fabulous views in the canyon! I actually had to sit down on the trail in the most treacherous, steep part to avoid loosing my footing due the high winds the day I hiked. Took 4 hours total.

Lovely well marked trail. I think it's a slightly better workout going from Lost Dog parking lot off 24th St to the Sunrise parking lot off East Via Linda, but either way it's a pleasant hike with great views.

Good trail, usually not crowded, and you might meet a couple of cows & horses along the way. Great views all the way, especially at the peak.

Lots of great photo opportunities, easy to follow trail, and wasn't crowded at all mid-week.

Evelyn Wilbur reviewed Cathedral Rock Trail

Have hike Cathedral Rock multiple times and always enjoyable. Fairly short hike, takes me about 1½ hours, including a break at the peak to admire the view. The elevation in general and the incline of the trail make for a good workout.

Tacked this trail onto the Dixie Mountain with Western Vista and Dixie Summits trail. This particular piece is fairly flat except for where it meets Dixie Mt Trail at two different points, therefore I would consider it an easy trail.

Hiked this trail with a friend a month ago, and hiked it by myself today. Started early - first car in the parking lot - and was on the trail by 7:45 am. Both hikes have taken me 3.5 hours, which tells me it's about 7.5 miles round trip from trail head past the observation deck and down to the actual memorial. I continue to be disappointed in the trail etiquette of some hikers. Since I was first person on the trail today, I passed every hiker after me, on my return. I know those hikers dropped orange peels, candy wrappers, and crackers, and I observed many hikers damaging the off-trail areas by taking shortcuts between the switch backs. In the one month between my hikes at this trail the shortcuts on the trail between the observation deck and the memorial are such that in many places the entire trail is deteriorated and new post-fire vegetation destroyed. Still a beautiful trail with stunning view and rock formations, but you'd better hike it soon before it becomes even more deteriorated.

Evelyn Wilbur reviewed Go John-Quartz-Slate Loop

Great views with some elevation, but not challenging. There's a beautiful quartz outcropping on, of course, the Quartz Trail section. Quartz and Slate sections have several benches.

Evelyn Wilbur reviewed North Mountain Trail

Short, steep, rough paved road with a good amount of elevation in a short distance. I like to make two round trips, but I've seen some people make multiple trips. Great views from the bench at the summit.

I like the Bright Angel Trail better, but this trail is also stupendous! Plenty of switchbacks, lots of sheer drops to the side of the trail, and quite a few pack mules. Met a few very friendly elk at the trail head and parking area. Took me 3 hours round trip to Skeleton Point and back.

Love this trail! Lots of switchbacks, fabulous views all the way down and back, and a great cardio workout. It took me 3 hours total. I wouldn't want to hike this trail in any of the hot summer months.

Lots of boulder scrambling, plenty of elevation, and fabulous views from the top. You may want to wear gloves because you'll be reaching over quite a few boulders on your way up. Wear sticky soled shoes and be considerate and tolerant - it's crowded, and some hikers are struggling. You may need to park at a nearby shopping center or hotel lot due to very high traffic on this trail.

Evelyn Wilbur reviewed Shaw Butte and Charles M Christiansen Loop Trail

One of my favorite go-to hikes for a reasonably good workout in a short amount of time. I always take the south route first, since there are rough, modest inclines which require some careful stepping, then take the north route down to the parking lot. Restrooms and water on site, and don't forget to stop at the Visitor Center!

Modest elevation, good surface on trail, and lots of nice views. There is an entrance fee, but worth it.

Evelyn Wilbur reviewed Dixie Mountain Loop with Two Summits

Nice views with reasonable elevation, especially at the two summits. You can expand this hike by using adjacent trails. Restrooms and water at trail head.

    Evelyn Wilbur reviewed Cholla Loop

OK trail with some elevation, but not enough to get a serious cardio workout. Lots of loose rubble which makes for slippery footing at times. I like to hike this loop, then walk across the picnic area and hike the Sunrise, Coachwhip, Ridgeline Trail. Restrooms and water on site.

Restrooms, soccer field, water, and dog park at the Deem Hills Parkway entrance, but only limited parking at the 39th Ave entrance. Great variety of trails - you can switch it up along the way among trails. Not a lot of "rubble" that some trails have, so fairly good footing. Can get a few muddy spots after a heavy rain, but only a few, and they dry out quickly. I've seen rattlesnakes, road runners, lizards, ground squirrels, quail, and there is evidence of javelina in the area. Spring time brings a spectacular cactus and wildflower blossom show.

Evelyn Wilbur reviewed Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial Trail

Wonderful hike - lovely views and a fitting tribute at the actual memorial site. It's a well-kept trail with quite a few switchbacks and a fair amount of elevation. Too many hikers have taken "short cuts" in between the switchbacks which is deteriorating some parts of the trail. The downhill return can be somewhat slippery since there's quite a bit of grit on the trail. There are only 13 parking spaces, plus a few motorcycle slots, and it's a one-way road. If you don't get a parking space you must proceed back down the hill and drive to Yarnell where you can get a shuttle bus from the Yarnell Assembly of God church parking lot, ONLY Thursday through Sunday.
