Evan Eschyshyn reviewed Mount Baldy Trail

Fairly steep initial incline, but it does level out near the top. I did the north to south loop yesterday. Very windy. I'm not sure if that can be classified as scrambling. The ridge over to the south summit is definitely SKETCHY. Definitely not for rookies. The groups that I saw in front and behind me did not do this as a loop.

When I was on the south summit there was a helicopter overhead every 2 minutes it seemed.

I did this hike solo yesterday. Smokey, but it didn't affect me too much, other then the views. The views were still good, and the smoke with the sun shining through it created some nice effects. There is a register at the top in a green gun ammo box.

I did this hike as a LOOP.

Others have said do not do it as a loop, but if you are a decent scrambler, you can do some scree skiing (use treking poles) down to the dry waterfall, and make your way down to the dry river bed. There are several dry waterfalls, I used the second one from that is visible from the summit. GaiaGPS shows 3 on the map. I used the middle one. You will need to climb down a ~10foot waterfall. There are decent footholds for most of it. I had to drop the last 3feet (I'm 5'8) Do this in a group, you don't want to injure yourself and be stranded in the backcountry.

If you do the loop, you will have a long (and pretty boring) walk up the dry riverbed back to the trailhead.

Perfect weather for this Hike today. Awesome rock scrambling. Not for a rookie scrambler.

Definitely do it Counter clockwise. I don't think I'd want to attempt scrambling down the steep section and have to see how far down it is, if you did it clockwise.

Great views, and after you get to the summit of Heart Mountain, it gets easier. Quite a long loop around through dense forest on the return.

Great trail. I'd put it on the easy side of moderate for difficulty. Trekking poles will help with the final ascent to the fire lookout on Yates Mountain, especially if there is snow. Great views up top. Do the loop, not out and back. It's ~15km to the parking lot.

Tried to do this yesterday. Was forced to turn back from the insane wind gusts a couple peaks before the summit. The original ascent is fairly steep, but then it gets easier once you start going over the peaks.

Short, but Steep. Looking back at my track recording, I did deviate from the original course on the way down, but I wasn't off by much. Trekking poles will help on the way down, till you hit the rock scrambling section, then they get in the way. There was 5 Mountain sheep right next to the trail. If you look closely, you might find some seashell fossils in the black scree right before the plateau.

Easy till you get out of the treeline, then the slopes all get steeper. Take extra clothes, once you get out of the treeline it starts to get cold from the strong wind gusts. Just when you think you are nearing the end, another peak appears.
