Fakahatchee . reviewed Forty Acre Rock Heritage Preserve Trail

I keep finding myself heading back to 40 acre rock, love this place. Really cool plants inhabit the vernal pools on the rock, some only peek out for a few weeks, flower, and then return to dormancy. The most recent recording I took will ensure that you see just about everything. It includes the walk around the beaver pond, rock formations, the section along the creek, and the waterfall/cave (second stopping point).

Nice trail with varied terrain, takes you through multiple environments, from pine forests, to hardwoods, and then to swamps. The view from the overlook is awesome and the highlight of the trip.

Fakahatchee . reviewed Carolina Sandhills NWR - Tate's Trail

Tate's trail offers the opportunity to hike in a unique habitat, the longleaf pine forest. Here you will see a number of rare plant species, and wildlife. Halfway down the trail is a number of dead longleaf pines, home to a number of RCW's (red cockaded woodpeckers). The trail also offers some great views of the adjacent ponds. Elevation is varied, and footing is hardpacked/sandy.

This hike can be done out and back, or one way if you have an additional vehicle. The second vehicle should park at the bottom of the dirt road next to "lake Number 12". You'll see the turn off for this parking area immediately east of SR 145 on Refuge Visitor's Drive.

Fakahatchee . reviewed Bennett's Bay Heritage Preserve

Bennett's Bay offers an approximately 2.0 mile trail that takes visitors into the outer extremities of an intact Carolina Bay. Quiet, serene, and a diverse palette of plant species. This trail does not see routine maintenance, with one particular spur trail fully blocked by fallen trees. Surrounding areas are wet, so the summer months could be particularly bad for mosquitoes and horseflies. Nice, leisurely walk if you happen to be in the area.
