Erin Walsh reviewed Storm King Mountain via Storm King Trail

This was a well-balanced hike—equal parts light to medium scrabbling over sheer rock and painless and serene strolling beneath a thick forested canopy. Start this hike by bearing to your left to get the walk up out of the way. We brought our small dog who is a master scrambler and had to be lifted only once or twice. This is an awesome hike that you can cut in half by taking the middle route in the center of the loop. A good two hours going this way. Some great views from the top. Be careful and don’t pass the parking lot on the right as you climb up the mountain on Route 9A or you’ll have to turn around and go all the way back down the mountain and come back up—you can only enter the lot going north. Have fun!

Cool views from the edges of this trail. With the mist rolling in it felt like a different planet. Definitely a must-visit for visitors to Acadia.

Funny story about this walk. Things looked pretty dry as we started over and then entered the island. We hiked up to the top, about a half-mile. Lots of signs warning about the tides and keeping track of time. So we come back down the island path, which is very pretty and quiet. Actually it turned out to be very quiet since we were the last two people and a dog left on it. The tide was coming in and had cut off part of the bar closest to the island already. We were able to walk through the water holding the dog and make it back to a dry part of the bar no problem. But after about five more minutes it was remarkable how quickly so much of the bar had submerged. Definitely worth visiting this beautiful sight and walking across. Make sure you read all the signs. And if you’re the last person around on the island you should start to turn your walk into at least a slow jog.

    This was a lovely hike!

We hiked it on a bizarrely warm day in February with a small chihuahua.

There were difficult moments peppered into what was overall a moderate difficulty level. Pretty icy in the winter and for our warm day there was a ton of mud that got you slipping and sliding. You must be careful on this hike but with some good boots you’re ok. Hang onto the trees! Go topside to avoid the ice patches. Some ice patches are hidden under lots of mud so be careful.!

But again, we were with a chihuahua so it couldn’t be so hard, right?

Waterfall lookout at the top is beautiful. I wish there were picnic tables or something but we found a goood rock to snack upon.

So many stairs. But pretty and doable.

The middle section (after the initial rock scramble ) turns into a gorgeous sloping up and down adventure.

Trailhead from the road says something like “preservation” so be careful not to miss it. Parking lot gets super crowded but people are in and out all day so if you just wait a flash you’ll get a spot. A small bit of walking along the highway to get to the trail.

Crowded at the trailhead but winds up being pretty private because of all the space. A small moment of oh-my-god-cliffs. Just hang on. It’s short-lived.

Would do again any day. So would Puppito.❤️
