This is a nice, brisk hike to a beautiful vantage point. I made it up and down in under an hour, minus some time sitting on the rocks at the top and enjoying the view. Even though it's a pretty heavily wooded area, there was quite a bit of sun exposure in the middle of the day. Sun protection and bug spray are highly recommended.

Erin Moore reviewed Butler Fork and Desolation Trail to Mount Raymond

This trail is stunning. Today my friends and I climbed in about 5.5 hours, including short breaks and about 20 minutes resting on the Raymond summit. Except for a few small patches the snow is just about gone. The first third is mostly shaded, but quite steep, and the trail is a bit overgrown in parts so you might want to wear long pants. From the switchbacks to the pass between gobblers knob and Raymond, the incline is less intense, and you still get quite a bit of shade. The last mile or so to the top is much more exposed, and there are some pretty difficult moments climbing the rocky ridge before the summit. Still, nothing too technical. Be very cautious and make sure you've got good footwear. Highly recommend this hike to anyone looking for a tough, less trafficked, and beautiful climb.

I hiked this trail in about 4.5 hours today--it took 2 hours to get to the Saddle and another 40 minutes to summit. It's a beautiful hike throughout and the views are stunning, but I definitely think these reviews understate how difficult and risky it is. "The Scramble" is 600 feet of steep, rocky terrain, difficult to navigate if you have shaky legs after a few hours of tough hiking. Today there was wind and light rain up there, and the rocks became slippery. Do not go up this without proper footwear. In fact, end your hike at the saddle if you have any concerns about your ability to summit. Today when I got back down there was a search and rescue crew headed up to save someone. This hike is awesome, but it's no joke. Be in shape, have the right gear, and be cautious.
