Beautiful hike - about 1/2 covered, 1/2 exposed. Starting early helped quite a bit with the heat as this can be a warm one being closer to the city and lower elevation than others up the canyons. The hike starts in a cool, covered gulch, then sidehills, and then reaches a ridge which takes you to the top.

This hike could be described a bit better. Generally, there are 4 destinations. #2 is most popular and should be rated as moderate. The full trail (to #4) is certainly difficult.

    1) the lower reservoir – maybe a mile or so, one way.
    2) the lower waterfall – about 3.4 miles round trip, and 1,800 elevation gain.
    3) the upper waterfall – about 5.6 miles round trip, and 2,360 elevation gain.
    4) the upper reservoir – about 8.4 miles round trip, and 4,150 elevation gain.

The Bells Canyon trail is very easy to follow – just stay on the obvious trail that has plenty of granite rocks in the path. However, to get to the lower waterfall (#2 above), look for a large pine tree on your left – about 1.7 miles up the trail. That tree marks a short and steep trail that takes you to the waterfall. It's a very short hike (about 100 yards) from the main trail to the falls. You'll be able to hear them, but won't see them from the main trail.

Erik Pettee reviewed Lake Serene Trail

A new review for an old hike (completed in July, 2014) – the name says it all. Lake Serene is truly beautiful. The ascent is as rewarding as the lake itself. It climbs steadily and the quality of the trail (soft, shaded dirt) is pretty hard to beat. Loved the rushing water and falls near the beginning. Highly recommended. Again, get an early start on this one to beat the crowds. Hard to leave the lake once you reach it, but just think about all the people you'll have to pass on the way down. :)

Nice, easy hike near North Bend. We completed this a year or so ago. Be sure to go early or face the crowds. To say it's popular is an understatement.
