This is an excellent hike that doesn't get too much traffic in general. There are some very steep portions but very few rock steps, just steep trail that allows for a well maintained pace. Once you reach the ridge, the majority of elevation gain is complete and the views are gorgeous. Wildflowers were abundant on the ridge and the views of Cle Elum lake and Lake Kittitas are superb. All that remains is a simple ridge traverse with minimal exposure and an easy summit push to Mt. Baldy. On the way down, watch your steps, as some loose dirt and small rocky material can be a problem on tired legs. Overall it's a workout and a great hike that affords good views!

I started this hike from the lower trailhead when conditions were very foggy with low visibility at 2pm or so. The road to the lower trailhead is easily passable in most vehicles. If you don't have high clearance, drive slowly and with care, but as long as the road isn't excessively wet, any vehicle should be fine.

The hike itself starts out fairly easily through some wonderful forest. Once the first 1.8 miles are complete, you reach the connection to the upper trailhead connector. This is where it gets pretty steep and turns into an exceptional workout, The trail is well maintained and starts with wooded switchbacks before getting to pretty steep rock steps and small boulder field. The final push takes you through some simple scree areas, but it's notetheless quite a workout from the upper trailhead connector to the summit! At the summit, I didn't have great views (visibility was under 500 feet) but did get some great views of the trail's famous mountain goat population. I saw about a dozen goats in total, including some newborn kids. Be sure to give the goats plenty of space. They tend to be very docile but the wildlife must be respected. Keep your distance when taking pictures.

All in all, it's a well maintained trail and a heck of a workout. I'll be sure to do it again on a sunny day when the views are better!
