    MLE HIKES reviewed Carr Peak

Just went this weekend--Mid November and there was a light sprinkle of snow everywhere that was breath-taking. This is my go-to day hike as you can do it in half a day and still get other things done. It's about 5 miles round trip from the Sawmill trailhead. I brought all 3 dogs and we saw a few pretty birds and about 6 other hikers. I do this hike in about 4 hours stopping with dogs but I think one could easily do it in 3 really moving fast.

Went up and camped about six miles in right before the big camp. Pushed for the summit the next day even though it was icy and stormy throughout the night. Made it to the top around 11:30--started around 5 a.m. This was really an experience. Hard, sometimes really hard, but my first big peak and so, so worth it.

I, for some reason, decided to hike this on the hottest day we've had in Southern Arizona. I went up with a hiking partner as we're training for Whitney. The trail was good, but there was little shade and it was HOT, HOT, HOT. There is as nice saddle near the tops (one mile to go) where we had lunch and sat in the shade to rev up for the summit. It took us maybe thirty minutes from there to get to the top. It was a little steeper but not as bad as the switchbacks before that point. We summited around 1 p.m. We signed the book. Only complaint, that of course is no big deal, were the bugs at the top. Tons of them. I ate three. We started down and were back at the car at 4. I think we would have been quicker but the 100 plus heat zapped us a bit. This is a great hike for a workout. Really kicks your butt on the uphill. If scenery was a tad better, I'd give it a 5.

The trash talked about in previous reviews was nowhere to be seen. Beautiful vistas all around. The first two miles are the hardest part; if you can get through that the rest of the hike isn't as bad. Reaching the summit was well-earned. My group stopped and ate lunch before returning down to the parking lot. No wildlife today; just lizards. About 10.5 round trip. This is a really good day hike and I would recommend it to people visiting the area or locals looking to do something different.

I went to do this today, and couldn't find the trailhead. Even asked a Park Ranger and they didn't know of it. Tried everything. If you have an idea, let me know. I did the Lake trail instead, which worked out for my dogs, but I still want to find this trail!

It's one of those short jaunts to move you from one parking lot to another. If you have kids, there's some information you might like along the trail and it's easy.

I went during monsoon season so there was the bonus of a running waterfall but the down side of bush-wacking in snake country. I saw many birds, including several swooping birds of prey, but lucked out with the snakes this time. I only saw two other people on the trail the entire day. This is a nice hike; lots of switchbacks and changes of scenery to keep one satisfied and wondering what's around the corner. I hadn't done a hike in awhile so I found it moderate, but when I'm hiking regularly would consider this an "easy" hike. I parked at Ramsey and found it very convenient. I didn't notice anything at the summit other than gravel and lots of beautiful butterflies. I stayed up top for a bit and looked at my map and rested before descending. It took me about 4.5 hours but I was regularly stopping to take photos. A nice day hike.

Whew! Left Arizona at 6 a.m. to make it to the Smugglers trailhead by 9:30 a.m. Went with my local hiking group and had a blast. Some tips: After the petroglyphs watch for the trail (it's slight) veering left and up. Follow that to the inside of the canyon. Follow cairns to the top. There are lots of boulders so watch your step! Bring a hat as black flies can be plentiful. Make sure to sign the log book hidden under the giant boulder at the top.Our GPS rated this in total as about a 9 mile round trip hike. Nice burn!

Great for logging miles and building up stamina. I did the highway to the bottom and enjoyed the burn on the way back up. Lots of mountain bikers and plenty of bugs. Ate my fair share of Mosquitos. Go early in the morning as its easily a whole day. Prepare to cross streams. Fire ants a possibility--OUCH!!

This is a great scenic hike! Make sure to get there early to receive your pass for Devil's Slide. Dogs are allowed on this trail. At the top, take a moment to have a sandwich or snack at the wonderful historical fire lookout. Beware of rattlesnakes which are out and about frequently.
