Dusty Cowell reviewed Byers Lake Trail

We stopped on the way back from our trip to the National Park. Incredible walk around a fantastic lake. I took some incredible pictures of the mountain range behind the lake. It’s a flat walk. However there are many tree branches to maneuver. There are some picnic tables on the far end of the lake. We enjoyed watching others canoe while we walked. There were a few areas where the lake was not visible from the walking path. Great trail.

Hiked up this trail with my family. Trail runs beside the river for the first half mile before heading up. The “heading up” got my heart rate going. There isn’t a lot of a thermal activity at the top, but the views were well worth the effort.

We walked about 2-3 miles to Shoshone Falls. Wide paved trail. There are a few small hills to tackle. We took some great pictures of the falls.

I have had this hike on my to do list for a few years now. The forecast called for the low 70’s and I jumped in my car. A few thoughts.
    1) The trail head was easy to find- just a mile or so on the left as you enter the park.
2). There is nothing to not like about this trail. It’s a lot easier than the Adventure Hiking trail down the road in O Bannon Woods State Park.
3). The trail, for the most part, was easy to follow. There were a few places where flooding had washed out small sections of the trail.
4). There is some logging going on during parts of the hike. If you begin going counter clockwise, you will get the worst of it over, early in the hike.
    5. If you are backpacking, there are a few really good spots to camp overlooking the lake.
    6) i saw a few dear.
7). With two bottles of water and some snacks, I was back at the car in about 4 hours with muddy shoes.
    8) if you looking for some solitude, you will find it on this hike.

A peaceful walk along the shore of the lake. A much narrower path than memorial loop.

A well marked wooded trail in a fantastic city park. Lots of hiking trails at Eagle Creek. If you are visiting the area, be sure and sign up to complete the ropes course that you will pass through on this hike or stop by the nature center and sit out on the deck over looking the lake.

Dusty Cowell reviewed Avon Town Hall Park Loop Trail

There are two short loops you can add to this walk to make the walk a little longer than 2 miles. Most of the trail is concrete. A short section is dirt. The park planners did well when they added this walking trail to the Avon community. After your walk, be sure and check out the comfortable chairs they have provided and enjoy the view of the lake.

I walked the 7 mile Out and Back trail when very few people were in the park. This would be a fantastic trail to run. The first mile is a wide open trail cut through the tall grass and bushes. The next five miles are primarily walked in the forest with a wide trail. The trail is easy to follow with mile markers every .25 miles. Very flat. Few tree roots on the trail. Great trail.

Dusty Cowell reviewed Turkey Run State Park #2 thru #11 Trails

If you enjoy hiking, you will enjoy the trails at Turkey Run. Lots of variety.
Trail 1 is an easy walk along the river
Trail 2 has an enjoyable section through box canyon.
Trail 3 is the must do short trail in Indiana
Trail 4- the back side of trail 4 is the quiet, river hooping trail.
Trail 5 is a short section where you will see quite a bit of traffic
Trail 8 is a walk in the woods. Less traffic
Trail 9 has two challenging sections through Boulder and Falls Canyon. Your feet will get wet.
    Trail 10 is easy walking.

Combine them all for 2-3 hours of fantastic hiking.

It's not a long walk in the woods, but the trails are well marked, well groomed and roam through quiet countryside. The park is growing in popularity and traffic on the trail is slowly increasing, however it's a safe and enjoyable place to take a walk in the woods.

Dusty Cowell reviewed Indiana Dunes State Park - Trail 8

I spent two half days hiking the trails in Indiana Dunes State Park. Trail 10 is the longest trail. You begin hiking through the woods and come back by hiking on the beach. I quickly learned that a mile hiking in the sand burns more energy than hiking through the woods. Bring your camera. I combined trail 9 and trail 10 the next day. Trail 9 brings you back on the hill over looking the lake. If you have never hiked the Sand Dunes, its worth the trip.

My 20 year old daughter and I arrived at the park in time to drop 2 gallons of water at Old Forest Road and at Cold Friday Road. I was using the Falcon Guide to Hiking Indiana as my guide. We went into the park and camped at the Pioneer Shelter. (This is a picnic shelter, not a camping shelter). We made a fire and camped for the night. By 7am, we were on the trail hiking clockwise, following the Falcon Guide. A few comments about the trail.
1). This is a strenuous hike. I have hiked many of Indiana trails and this wins for being the most challenging in some sections.
    2) The trail is in good shape in most areas, but not in all areas.
3). We lost the trail in 6-8 spots. Others have placed orange flags in many areas that lead us to the right spot or I would have spent more time looking for the trail. Thanks if you took the time to help in this way. I wish I would have brought ribbons to add to the clarity of the route.
4). Berry bushes have taken over the trail in numerous spots. You might think this sounds crazy, but if I hike this trail again, I would bring a mâché to clear the berry bushes as I walked.
    5) Going clockwise, the first 8 miles have the most hills. The last three miles have four to five difficult climbs.
    6) The Flacon guide listed a shelter at mile 4.8. However, I didn't see it or it's not there.
    7) We made it to Indian Creek Shelter by 3pm and rested till 5pm. This is a great spot to rest. We continued the next 4.4 miles to Old Homestead Shelter. This section had three areas where we lost the trail.
    8) We left the next morning by 7am and were back at the car around 10am, tired and ready for a nap.
    9. I am grateful this trail is here. It's the longest circular trail in Indiana that I know of. I am grateful for the Shelters. They are not real big, but they will hold 4-6 people. All the shelters have flat grassy areas to pitch a tent. The ladies at the entrance to the park were helpful, supplying updated maps. I would have given this trail 4 stars if the trail could be a little better marked. We hiked at a time where the trail was super wet and many of streams had water. We had an strenuous but enjoyable overnight hiking experience.
