Donovan Palmer reviewed North Mount Elbert Trail

Awesome hike. I started up the trail at 4:45 by flashlight, which put me on the summit at 8:30 and I had the summit to myself for a bit being the first one to arrive. The views on top are incredible and it is certainly worth hiking at least once.

If you read up on this peak from various reference materials, there are a number of 'false summits' that can demoralize you. Alltrails says this hike is 8.6 miles, my GPS track recorded 10.6 round trip. Regardless, it is a long hike, taking me 7 hours round trip with some stops. In my view the hardest part of the mountain is up the last false summit at 13,200 where it becomes very steep. If you can motor past this, wrap around the side and get up on top, you got the mountain beat.

Being prepared is the key to insuring success and no disappointment, so here's my recommendations:

    1. Start early. You get better weather, the trail is quiet and you might get the top by yourself! :)

    2. Get into shape. This is not a technical climb, but it is still long day at high altitudes particularly if you are visiting from out of state. If you have the opportunity to stay in Colorado for a bit, it will help. Also doing some conditioning hikes days before will make a lot of difference.

    3. Wear good boots. Particularly coming down is hard on your feet. This is the most important thing to spend money on.

    4. Using AllTrails and/or some other GPS, set 1,000 ft. ascent way points. This helps you forget about distance and think about climbing, which is where the mental game with this hike is and helps you look beyond the false summits.

    5. Bring layered clothes. Even though it was July, the wind yesterday got bitter on more than one occasion.

    6. Drink plenty of water. It goes without saying!

    Good luck and be safe!

If you don't like ascending pretty much the entire time, this trail is not for you. I hiked up to the highest point, but could have stopped and turned around at two beautiful overlook points.

At the trail head it appears the land owner has built an 'upper trail' because the original used to go through his property by his house. Just turn right before going into the gate. I was confused because my maps did not show the upper trail, but he was kind enough to point me around. Once you do start on the path he has put up a bunch of signs, ropes and orange marker tapes to keep you on the path, but you soon leave his property area and the scenery is beautiful.

Very pleasant wooded trail with occasional longer range views. The trail goes over a ridge and then drops down into East Lake Creek. After about 1.75 miles the trail at this time of year is very over grown by vegetation. It is a little bit of a nuisance but is easy to follow.

The jewel of this hike is that at East Lake Creek there is a footbridge and at this point your can hike south further into Holy Cross wilderness. The US Topographical map shows this trail but map on AllTrails does not. I would have loved to hiked up the valley for at least another mile or two, but I was running out of daylight and had to head back to the trail head.

I would definitely like to hike this again and also hike the Dead Dog Trail that forks off about 1/3 of the way in.

Nice easy walking trail. Only really gets a bit steep at the top near the ski run. Not many long views to be had, but if you are interested in a wooded trail this is worth walking at least once.
