One of the New England Hundred Highest. We did this trail on a hot, humid, buggy day just before the Memorial weekend. The access road off Upper Hollow Rd in Dorset, VT is dirt and gets fairly rough. We parked in an open area, probably used for snowmobile parking in winter. The trail follows the stream up to the col and then continues along the ridge. The trail is steep, especially after the remains of an old house. We stopped at the old tower and then topped Dorset and walked over to North Dorset. The existing trails do NOT always match up with what's on the map. The only view is from the old tower site.

Jim & I hiked the Rocky Branch trail on a cold, cold, January day as part of a day hike to Mt. Isolation. Rocky Branch was well packed out when we hiked it, traction aids (microspikes) were only required for some of the stream crossings due to ice and the final steep ascent of Mt. Isolation off of the Davis Path. A good portion of the elevation gain for the day was in the first two miles or so heading toward Engine Hill making the rest of the day fairly easy. We took the Engine Hill bushwhack at about the three mile mark and really enjoyed the walk through the birch glades. Both of us commented that the glades were the best part of the day. Outstanding views of a wind-blown Washington from Isolation. Trails taken: Rocky Branch, Engine Hill bushwhack, Isolation Path, and Davis Path. Back the way we came.

David Hollingshead reviewed Mt Moriah - Carter Moriah Trail

This was a great late summer hike. The weather was perfect although a bit windy. What else do you expect on Moriah? It was an easy climb up to Mt. Surprise and the view from the lookout ledge to the northern presidentials was very good. After Surprise the climb up to Moriah seemed to take forever! There was a lot of rock scrambling and there was a lot of muddy spots due to the recent rains. Every time we thought that we were nearing the top another uphill section appeared. Finally, after about 3 hours, we got to the summit. The view in all directions was fantastic and well worth the climb. We had lunch in a clearing out of the wind. We headed back to Gorham by going south on the Carter-Moriah ridge trail and down Stoney Brook trail. It was about a 11.5 mile loop.
