Denton Matheis reviewed Mount Tom, Mount Field, Mount Willey, and Mount Avalon Loop Trail

Sickest trail ladders ever going up Willey! Also, the birds on Field WILL eat out of your hand. There is an unmarked fork in the trail near the summit of Tom; go left. There's just a clearing on the right, the cairn is to the left. All summits marked by giant cairns and not actual signs or geological survey pins.

Great view of Woodsville and Wells River! Short trail but crazy steep.

Great view but super buggy, muddy, and not well maintained but at least it's short.

A bit muddy this time of year but the view is amazing.

Finished my hiking season this year with this one in the fall. It feels a bit steep at times but otherwise not difficult. And the summit has the largest cairn ever.

This is a great trail. Very gentle slope and much less rocky than most trails in the Whites, though it does have its rocky parts. But what it lacks in difficulty it makes up for in distance. It feels longer than what the maps say.

Good hike, but it was so humid the day we went that we were barely up the trail before we were dripping with sweat. The last bit above the tree line provided a welcome breeze.

Beautiful rock faces in the ravine! Brutally rocky.

We took the Falling Water trail up and Old Bridle Path down and I'm glad we did. In my opinion, going the opposite way would have been less enjoyable. Great scenery between the waterfalls and the view from the ridge. Though, if you're an out of shape, overweight guy in your mid-30s prepare to make this an all day trip. This took us 10 hours and we were glad to be done but it was well worth it.
