Dee Dee Walker reviewed Lion's Lair Trail

Rated easy by some but I give it a moderate to difficult if you do a large loop as I did and return via the East Ridge Trail to avoid the hoards on the Sanitas Valley Trail. I rate it easy-moderate-difficult in places depending on which descent you choose. I began at the Centennial Trailhead and walked up Sunshine Cyn. Trail crossing the Sunshine Cyn Rd. to the Lion's Lair Trailhead. Adds a mile one way. I plan to do it again but to go out and back and avoid BOTH the dodgy East Ridge and the over-crowded Sanitas Valley Trail descents. A well-cut and maintained trail but I did see the ever-present dog poo bags, etc. I recommend spring for viewing wildflowers. Fun with great views.

FANTASTIC HIKE!! Just read through the comments. There is NO PARKING PROBLEM HERE on weekends. Why? There is a FREE SHUTTLE with frequent runs from Nederland PnR to Hessie trailhead on Sat and Sun; the peak hiking days. Also, dogs must be leashed at ALL TIMES and NOT in the water or running around pooping everywhere. That goes for people too. Your poop must be buried and your dog's bagged and carried out. LEAVE NO TRACE. Here's a link to the Indian Peaks Wilderness rules. Cheers! https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/arp/passes-permits/?cid=fsm91_058238

Agree with Sean A. below. Went on a Friday and only saw 7 people. Did the whole loop plus Greenbriar Connector which was where I started because the Skip Bus drops you at the trailhead. I think very early spring or fall would be most picturesque for this walk. Mesa Trail is being flood mitigated along this bit, so workers up there. Good conditioning and peaceful on a weekday. Might be a nice snowshoe.

Take the FREE shuttle from Nederland PnR to the Hessie TH. A wonderful day hike which while a little challenging, is entirely do-able for almost EVERYONE. I just saw the dog comments and agree about the dogs. I only saw 2-3 unleashed and one was running through the meadows flushing and looking for a spot to drop. I also saw two piles of the stuff (poop) at the lake shore; they may have been human(!!) You have to bury yours and you should bag and carry out your dog's if you are a day hiker. This trail is a GIFT from THE SOURCE OF ALL, so please be as loving as SOURCE has been in gifting this trail to us. Yes, it is uphill and rocky and muddy in spots but I am 63.5 years and managed without problem. Take the FREE shuttle, follow the rules, and enjoy a wonderful wildflower hike!

Such a gift. Terrific for a group of almost any age and in any season. Just remember to pick up your trash and dog poop bags. Whew, nasty to see that.

WILDFLOWERS!!!! It's all just challenging enough for a mixed group. Scree can be a little slippery in spots.
It's an "easy form of steep" but don't be fooled, Anemone has some dodgy spots and people actually have fallen from there! so take care on the areas with steep drops into Boulder Cyn. where there are a lot of jagged, exposed rocks embedded into the trail. Keep your group focused through there and enjoy the little summits, flowers, and views! Oh, and pick up your dog poop bags. Whew, nasty.

Dee Dee Walker reviewed Mount Sanitas Trail

If you start from the Mt. Sanitas TH on the south side of the trail map shown here, that initial climb is often really crowded and it's narrow and the steps are wobbly and loose in places. The scree is really slippery all along so do take solid footwear. The East Ridge descent is gnarly and also crowded and steep and not always well marked in spots. I was almost mowed down there by a huge, bolting, unleashed dog charging down the East Ridge face! So beware of the hoards! Good views and a good time for a capable, prepared hiker. Moderate moving to difficult in places in my view.

The information here is largely accurate with the oversight of a few MAJOR points. Honestly, this is NOT a safe trail. The areas referred to as "waterfalls" are in fact, "washouts" and should be approached with extreme caution, particularly the washout near the outset of the trail when approaching from Rainbow (south). Next, the huge amount of exposed rock all along the narrow parts of the trail, often with very steep drops, pose risks for falling and injuries (or worse). Wind and weather (not to mention lightning strikes) have NOT been emphasized enough here to sober up a novice or tourist hiker into considering another trail choice. Although trail injury record keeping is dodgy, people actually do fall and injure themselves on this trail AND have to be evacuated. I love this site and think you do a great job but even the Forest Service has overlooked publishing the obvious hazards on this trail. Sure it's a stellar, awesome view and altitude hike for the strong with high mountain experience and immunity to risk. But it just isn't safe for most people expecting a moderate day hike. I rate it low because of the risks. Can't imagine it in snow and ice! Thank you and sorry but live to hike another trail friends.
