Lovely loop that lets you hike the Mt. San Jacinto area yet stay relatively close to the Tram station. The trail head begins at the sign behind the ranger's station where you must fill out a permit. The permit is free, but be sure to get one. The fine, if you're caught without one, is expensive ($450). At the sign, you have to choose if your going to go left (clockwise) or right (counter clockwise). Going clockwise will be steeper, yet shorter ascent to the High Country trail. It will be a tough climb if you're not in shape. Plenty of rocks and boulders to sit and rest if needed. Counter clockwise the hike to the High Country trail will be about twice as long, but the ascent not nearly as steep. You can also explore the surrounding area off this trail such as Round Valley and the Willow Creek Trail. Be sure to drop off the copy of your permit before heading back up to the the Tram station.

Lovely hike with great views once you reach the summit. If you begin at the ranger station you will soon encounter a climb with a series of switch backs. It's single file hiking for most of this trail. Heading down, it's rocky so watch your step. I brought a hiking pole to reduce the chance of slipping or losing my balance. I'm glad I did. I also agree with the moderate rating. Although there are areas I would consider "easy", the climbs both up and down definitely bump it up to a moderate hike in my opinion. Great trail for all ages, will hike it again.

I'm a local and had never heard of this trail until finding here on AllTrails. This is a VERY nice, well maintained trail located just off of Verbena Drive. It can be easy to miss if you don't look in the right direction and get spooked by the "No Trespassing" signs. The trail begins just beyond those signs and just slightly to the south on a road that is located behind some houses. Keep going and you'll see it. There's several small rock walls that people have built, but that is to keep the off-roaders out, not hikers. If you keep going you will have to do a bit of rock climbing, but nothing too difficult. Someone had decorated a couple of bushes like Xmas trees when we went about halfway up. It's a steady ascend, but there's really some great views. Will hike this again.
