Busy trail to Lake Isabelle. Above the lake the trail climbs some valley steps past a nice falls then enters a marshy area in order to bypass a rock slide. This can be messy at times. Above another step the trail passes a small lake. Now the trail gets difficult climbing very steeply up the hillside to the glacier.

At the end of October there was 3-6 inches of snow on the upper part of the trail, but was still able to reach the pass. Nice views of the east side of Mt Yale.

While this is a 4WD road it makes a nice hike. It was very nice and uncrowded at the end of September.
It take you past the old Mary Murphy Mines ruins. Further along there is an old grave along the roadside dating from 1884. Eventually it climbs above the treeline to a parking lot overlooking the lakes. From there an easy side trip can be made to the ridge overlooking Grizzly Gulch, as well as visiting both lakes.

Beautiful in early May with lots of snow on the surrounding Peaks. Last part of trail requires some scrambling over rocks.

The first part of the trip coincides with the Baldwin Gulch road that leads to the upper slopes of Mount Antero. The beginning is fairly steep but later levels off when it reaches the Baldwin Creek Valley. At a prominent fork marked with signs go to the right towards Baldwin Lake. Large rock glaciers line the southeastern side of the valley. Upper part of the valley is tundra with several small lakes below the larger Baldwin Lake

This is a very nice trail that I've hiked a number of times over the years. The location given as near Nathrop is wrong. The closest town is actually Buena Vista as the trailhead is located off the Cottonwood Pass highway.
The trail starts off in the forest and travels around a hillside crossing several rockslides before entering the Ptarmigan Creek Valley. It crosses the old Ptarmigan Creek road. As the trail ascends to the treeline it passes several small lakes. A rock glacier can be seen to the west. In this area it is easy to lose the trail as there are several side trails leading to camping spots.
Beyond the first small lakes the trail emerges into the tundra and ascends a final step in the valley before arriving at Ptarmigan Lake. The lake is very open with great views all around including Mt. Yale. It seems to be a popular spot with fisherman. As I don't fish myself I can't comment on the quality of the fishing.
For the more adventurous beyond the lake the trail ascends a short distance to a pass connecting to South Cottonwood Creek by way of a trail and a jeep road. Some people use the jeep road to shorten the access to the lake. Following the ridge to the east it is a fairly easy scramble to the wide summit plateau of Jones Peak 13,200 ft. From there tremendous views area available of the whole surrounding area including Cottonwood Pass, Emma Burr Mtn, Mt Kreuzer, The Three Apostles, Turner Peak and Mount Yale.
