DAWN BULL reviewed Lower Macleay Park to Pittock Mansion

Hiked on Nov 8. Bathrooms at TH, no parking fee, parked on Thurman and walked down stairs next to the bridge. First section of the trail is beautiful, serene, canopied forest that wanders next to Baluch Creek. Continue straight at Stone House...trail has a few turns where it’s best to check your navigation because it is not well-marked up to Pittock Mansion. After you cross CORNELL Rd, you will hear traffic the rest of the way. Slight ascend, dense forest, and beautiful scenic views of P-town are your reward.

Hiked Nov 3: NW Forest Pass needed, easy road terrain driving in, bathrooms at TH. Well-marked, slight incline/decline, trail was not slick, a few blow-downs, very very wet, sometimes feel as if you are walking through a waterfall while on the trail, although it was easy to navigate. Huge beautiful old growths and so many waterfalls, I lost count! Lake 22 was beautiful! Quite popular but not overcrowded. Can’t wait to come back in the Spring!

Hiked on Oct 18. Well-marked trail, bathroom available nearby, no fee to park. Steep in sections, lots of roots on trial. Gorgeous views of the ocean. Take the short hike to Devils Cauldron. Very unusual trees-some had root systems that were above ground and saw lots of old growths.

Pretty cool walking under Hood River Meadows ski lift with no snow! Steep in a few spots and Mt Hood peak poking her head through the trees...well-marked trail. Both waterfalls are stunning was very quiet for sunny Sunday morning. Pretty steep going down to Sahalie Falls-lots of roots to help with the scramble and absolutely worth it!

DAWN BULL reviewed Nels Rogers-University Falls Loop Trail

Hiked on Oct 12: no pass required, usually well-marked trail but wise to bring navigation...cross lots of gravel roads, could hear gunshots, off road vehicles...no scenic views but the University Falls was beautiful. Fall foliage is bright yellows, mushrooms starting to poke out. Nice terrain with moderate up and down incline and decline.

DAWN BULL reviewed Wallowa Lake East Moraine Trail

Hiked on Sept 30: unmarked trail, no fee pass needed. Steep at the very beginning. Rocky, fairly flat terrain. Gives you birds-eye view of Joseph, Wallowa Lake, Bonneville Peak and Seven Devils. Beautiful hike -super easy and a nice unusual perspective of the lake...not a good place to be in a thunderstorm and cougars frequently are seen here during the day

DAWN BULL reviewed Ice Lake and Matterhorn Peak

Hiked on Sept 28. Need a NW Forest Pass. Water available (bring treatment) all along Trail to Ice Lake. Nice gradual incline and trail is well-marked. Took me 3 hours, 72 degrees and sunny. Beautiful yellow Fall foliage all along route. It is hunting season now so be aware of that and wear neon orange. Trail to Matterhorn was well-marked for first 3/4 mile, after that I was just looking for the least slippery slope. Had to stop twice to rest. Thin air and quite steep. Took me 1 1/2 hours to reach summit. Worth every step to get a 360 view of the stunning Eagle Caps! I was actually higher than some birds! This trail is not for anyone who is afraid of heights or is not in good shape. Back at car at 6:10 pm so it took me almost 10 hours with stops for photos and snacks. One of the most beautiful hikes I have ever done!

Hiked in one day on Sept 11. On trail at 3:35 am, make sure you go to Ribbon Falls! Arrived at Phantom noon. 102 in the shade. Took frequent stops to dip shirt, hat & bandanna in Creek. Amazingly refreshing that Bright Angel Creek is near most of the way til PR. Hardest part was from River Resthouse to Indian Garden because of intense heat. We powered through, reached IG at 3:15. Soaked in the Creek, ate more salty crap and trudged on. Passed 3 mile and 1 1/2 mile without stopping. Watched the sunset and asked ourselves WTH is that TH?!? Arrived BA TH at 6:53 with that feeling of accomplishment you get when you train really hard for a year. I wouldn’t change one single thing-if you do this hike in one day: train, train, train.

DAWN BULL reviewed Salmon Trail via Kinzel

Hiked on Aug 29: easy road access to TH. U need a permit. Well-marked trail, nice incline to get warmed up and then it gets steep for about 4 miles. Kinzel Lake was crystal clear, sunny day so lots of beautiful scenic views and majestic view of Mt Hood. No bugs. Blowdown gives you a challenging workout on the way down. Heard there were car break ins so I emptied everything I didn’t want but we didn’t have any trouble. It was quite tranquil listening to the Salmon River on the way up!

    DAWN BULL reviewed Hunchback Trail

Hiked Aug 2: Well marked trail, very steep. Had just rained and we were unprepared for getting very wet from leaves. Lots of blowdown so u will be climbing over trees. Didn’t make it to Kinzel Lake and we were rewarded with beautiful views on the way down because it cleared up. Lots of unusual nature surprises keep your eyes open for the rock that looks like a buffalo, the tree that looks like a big bad wolf and another tree that looks like a duck

Hiked July 26: this one has it all: abundant wildflowers, steady inclines, patches of snow, creeks to cool off in, wild huckleberries, raspberries and strawberries. Breathtaking and astounding views. Very well marked trails, easy access to TH. Well worth the 3 hour drive!

DAWN BULL reviewed Lewis River Falls Trail

Hiked 7/17: NFRD 90 is full of dips that u won’t see but will hear the bottom of your car scraping the pavement- 30 mph max! Hike: need a NW Forest Pass....well marked trail with Lewis River right next to you almost the entire way up to Upper Falls. No bugs and only saw 2 people on the way in. Great hike for a hot day!
