cali covey reviewed Crystal Lake Trail

I would not call this an easy hike like others mention. My Garmin 5X Plus had me at 10,759 feet above sea level at the highest, so the elevation makes this a moderate hike for sure. I ran into several people that turned around. Hike begins at Lake George and you go up and up to the destination to the side of the peak above Lake George called Crystal Crag. Lots of switchbacks and shade help the trip up until you descend down to beautiful Crystal lake. Nice views of lake George and lake Mary from above. Great hike that will get your heart pumping.

Great trail. Starts off straight uphill for the 1st half mile, then you get roller coaster type hills as you see your destination, the american flag as you finish the last leg on the patriot trail. You are then treated with a beautiful view at the top of Dana Point and the ocean.
Nice wide dusty, dirt packed trail. Views on the way up of rolling hills and highway 5 in the distance. Many trail variations. Great area to get some cardio. Took 1:30 round trip at 4.5 miles.

This is a great trail trail with nice views on the way up of Lake Murray. Nice displays at the top to show the landmarks in the distance. No shade, rocky, bring plenty of water, good hiking shoes.

This is a great area. Many variations and was really feeling it the last couple of miles.
Took a slight variation going Mathis Canyon to the Top of the World which is a little shorter. Trail is in great shape and wide. Begins on tar and is flat until Mathis Canyon, then up, up, up. Glad i had my hiking poles. Great view at the top of the world although a little cloudy which was good as it was cooler. Ended at 9.81 miles round trip with 1100 elevation gain. Can't wait to go back and try other trails like Car Wreck.

Great hike. Tahquitz Peak via Southridge trail. Wanted to summit using the Saddle but permits were used up. The one mile dirt trail can be challenging if you do not have 4 wheel drive. Several major potholes Steep trail. Wide enough. Not really rocky until you get close to the summit. Bring lots of water. Did it in 77 degree weather which is good. Had to stop a lot the last 1/2 mile as the altitude was getting to me. Was thinking that if 10 degrees warmer and sunny, I would have turned around. You just keep pluggin away at the switchbacks and suddenly the tower appears. What a view. Joined the "Ancient and Honerable Order of Squirrels", what an honor...lol The ranger was nice and talked about the 2013 Mountain fire( think it started in Mountain Center) where they had to evacuate.
I would rate this as moderate to difficult. It is a real butt kicker. For me anyway. Harder than suicide rock. Highly recommend, but in below 80 degree weather. Final stats: 7.2 miles roundtrip(3.2 according to ranger station), 2441 ascent, 4:15 total time, with about 1/2 at the top.

This is a great trail. Hike down hill from Peninsula drive where you park...Carlsbad village drive to the left. Many variations. Once I got to asphalt road. I took a left and walked across the dam and up the mountain and back the same way for about 3.25 miles and a 640 foot ascent. About 1 hour 5 minutes. Great view from the top. Neat volcano. With so many variations, another great after work place to go. Not as much ascent or trail grooming as their is at Double Peak in San Marcos( about 1000 feet ascent according to my trusty Suunto Traverse), but still a great workout and many variations make this the top Carlsbad choice, I think. Pretty cool to hike up a volcano. I would agree with moderate rating.

Icehouse Canyon Trail is a great cardio trail up to Icehouse Saddle. Rocky, Plenty of trees for shade. Ascent about 2500 feet. It was very pleasant and cool at the saddle. For some reason it was extremely hazy. Could not smell smoke. I intended to go back down the same way for a 7.2 mile roundtrip, when I missed the turn and ended up on the Chapman Trail. I was told this was more scenic. Now I know why. It hugs the side of the mountain all of the way down. The trail is very narrow in many spots with loose rock. I felt myself hugging the rocks in certain situations. You are very exposed in certain areas, and would not want to be on this trail in high winds. Not for the faint of heart. Luckily, I was able to descend with 3 other people whom also made the same mistake as me. It hooks backup with Icehouse with about .8 miles left to the trailhead. Very scenic is the Chapman but unnerving at time. Total miles 9.0 , Ascent 2480, hours 4:45 (2 hours up to Icehouse saddle on the Icehouse Canyon Trail) 2:45 down via Chapman. Next time its Icehouse trail up and down. I will avoid descending on the Chapman.

This is a tough trail. According to my Suunto Traverse, it was a 1430 feet ascent to the top, and 4.20 from the parking lot. Steep, lots of loose rock, no shade. You really need to have good shoes. I have Ahnu Mendocino leather boots and I slipped on loose rock and landed on my rear end, on the backside heading down to the water tower from the summit. Can't believe I saw a woman with a baby on the summit taking a selfie. With all the loose rock, ruts, etc. it is not difficult to slip. Great workout. Close to Pala Casino.

Great trail. I do this after work. About 950 feet ascent to the top. Slightly over 4 miles round trip.
The best groomed trails i have run across. No ruts. You go through pavement residential and then hit the sand which is groomed.

Straight up. 1.5 hours round trip. Great hike. Nice views. You never feel like you are in the middle of nowhere like at the outskirts of Daley Ranch, Hellhole canyon.

Great hike. Not difficult. Good workout. Bring plenty of water. Like others, it is more like 6.5 miles. Starts in the woods and eventually comes to the prairie. Lots of cows, windy, and the rock is right off the PCT. I went to the wrong rock formation thinking it was left and a way from the path.

Park across from the fire station in Warner Springs, walk across the road to the gate, open and your in. If you like to golf, combine it with a round at Warner Springs golf club about a mile up the road. Cant go wrong on a day trip.

Hiked this today. Almost 7 miles round trip.Took me about 3 1/2 hours total. Temperature around 40 degrees. It had snowed the night before. Great workout. Almost turned around but once i saw the sign to suicide rock 1.0 miles, I felt rejuvenated. Beautiful view at the top.

There are a couple of tricky spots past the 1.0 sign where the trail is very narrow and with the snow pack made it slippery and had me gripping the side of the mountain. If you lose it, you drop 20 feet. Would not want to navigate when it ices up. At the top it is about 7500 feet. Pretty awesome.
