Daniel Erlandson reviewed East Rim Trail to Observation Point

ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. Chose this over angels landing due to the crowds/heat/and basic safety. This view point gets you WAAAY above the valley anyway and is just breathtaking. Advice: do it early in the day and bring PLENTY of fluids because it gets H.O.T. Trying to write an honest review here because I’m a marathoner and hiking up and down was really fairly easy - I could probably do it in an hour up and a half hour back down (not counting the time spent up there). BUT, if my 52 year old average-fit father can do it 1.5 hours up and 1 hour back in the sweltering heat at 1pm, YOU also can do it! Like I said, I’d advise you to do it early if you can, and then bring plenty of fluids regardless of the time of day. And then enjoy one of the best views you’ll ever see!

The amazing thing about this area is that so many of the trails connect! I will most definitely be back and do more hiking, but this time around, Yosemite was just a half-day stop. And if you’re doing the same thing, get here early and head to this spot! I’m currently on a huge road trip and this may have been the most amazing sight my eyes have ever seen. Simply spectacular. Additionally, another cool thing is that there is great phone connection so I was able to facetime and share the view with some of my friends and family back home. All that to say, I’d HIGHLY recommend this lookout point of the valley, whether you’re just stopping by the park for a few hours, or hiking some of the trails around it!

If you’re in Redwood, you HAVE to do this trail. No arguments!! It’s super easy to get a “permit” from the Kuchal visitor center. Ask, and they’ll give directions and a lock code for the gate you have to drive through in order to get this trail head. The only thing is that it’s a one way gravel road and they’re doing a lot of construction in the area, but the whole process (including hiking) took only 4 hours. 1. Kuchal center for permit 2. Drive to trail head 3. Hike one of the most incredible hikes you’ll ever do 4. Drive back up. The hike itself is a about 1.5 miles down hill with switchbacks, then a WONDERFUL flat mile loop trail at the bottom surrounded by redwoods, then 1.5 back up. I’m a runner and I gave myself a challenge to run the whole way up, and I made it up in 13 minutes! All that to remind you: HIKE THIS TRAIL

Super awesome trail. Did this last week with my family and only took us about 1.5 hrs up and maybe an hour to get back. Really unfortunate we did this right when the area got its first rain in months, so it was POURING, and the view at the top was blocked by fog. I give it 4 stars though because the hike was still fun and I’m definitely gonna need to get back here so I can witness the view I’ve heard about!
