Dakota Duff reviewed Sprague Lake Trail

Popular place in mid-February. The snow is well packed — snowshoes not required for the lake loop.

Lots of hikers out on the trail on a mid-January Saturday — more than when we hiked it in the Summer a few years ago. Great winter hike. Some snowy and icy areas. I'd recommend trekking poles in winter.

Took my two-year-old for a short hike on a warm day up in the snow. This is a nice area and a nice easy trail. The trail is well marked and maintained. There's a nice rocky point just off the Shoshone trail with a nice view. We were there on a somewhat windy day, but once we made it over the dam the wind was not a problem. Permits are available up the road at Flatiron Reservoir. Great hike for a family with small kids!

Nice area. We went on a Sunday and it was a bit crowded, but not too bad for a free area on a weekend. I'd recommend at least going most of the way to Hunter Loop, as there are some nice views of the entire "backbone" about 0.2 miles before the loop starts. There's virtually no shade here, as others have noted.
