I started and finished at the Bierstadt Lake TH. The lake itself is pretty, but wasn’t the highlight of the hike for me. I much preferred the hike between the trailhead and the lake. You get AMAZING views of Longs Peak, Hallett Peak, and various other mountains whose names I don’t know. Beautiful vistas all along the trail looking east, south, and west. The climb from the TH to the lake isn’t too bad. Portions are steep and it’s rocky in some areas, but it’s all definitely manageable and worth it for the views you get. Lost a star in my rating simply because the lake wasn’t anything extraordinary.

This was my first “hard” hike and it was, in fact, hard but it’s doable for anyone who’s moderately in shape. It’s helpful to be acclimatized to the altitude, but I met a hiker who has come from sea level the day before and passed me (a local) on the trail. I’m a slow hiker and it took me about 4.5 hours to reach the summit. As others have mentioned, about half the hike is above the treeline so make sure you have a wind layer. I wore regular gym leggings, a tank top, a long sleeved shirt, a sweater, a vest, and my wind jacket. I also wore gloves and a wool beanie, and I was comfortable. Temps were in the 30s at the summit around noon and winds had to have been at least 30mph. Beautiful views and totally worth the effort. Even if you don’t hit the summit, you’ll get some pretty amazing views along the way.

Great trail with amazing views of Longs Peak, Hallett Peak, and Morraine Park. Saw a few other groups going up around the same time as me, around 8:30am on a Sunday. Parking was nearly full when I arrived and was packed by the time I got back to the trail head. Not overly crowded like Dream Lake, but there were several groups at the summit and I saw many more groups headed up as I was headed down. If you plan on staying at the summit for a while, definitely wear sunscreen. Most of the trail is shaded but I got burned after about 90 min at the summit. My recommendation: bring snacks or a lunch and spend some time at the summit enjoying the views you worked for.
