Probably one of the best lakes in Desolation

Pretty moderate trail. The beginning and the end have some climbs but a beautiful scenery the entire trail. We went later in the summer, but I've been told that Spring time is the best with all the spring flowers. The lake itself is more of a "mushy" lake so you might get a little muddy if you go in, but there's lots of camping spots around the lake if you walk a little. We went during a non burning month, but one of our neighbors felt like they didn't have to follow the rules so our camp was encompassed in smoke for the night. There's a beautiful view looking down to Tahoe.

One of the most amazing experiences of my life. Permits are limited each day so only a lucky few get to experience this. I highly suggest adding this to your must-do list. We had Campsite #11 so it wasn't as long the second day, but the first day seemed to go on forever. I also recommend getting on the earlier shuttles to the starting point. You could take the later one, but you'd probably be getting to your site at dusk if you go at a leisurely pace.

This is a highly traveled trail so if you don't like crowds either go during the week or try another trail. The hot springs at the end are nice, but you have to share a 2/3-person bath with approx 8+ people. A little too much sweat and bodily fluids in one body of water for me. Camping spots are generally pretty crowded because of the number of people coming through. Definitely a tough hike, especially in the heat.

Beautiful trail in Mammoth. We backpacked in on a weekend so the trails were pretty crowded up until Barney lake. Then the ascent up the crest over to Duck Lake was pretty empty. There were only 3 other groups at the lake for the weekend so it felt like you almost had it all to yourself. Water was freezing even that late in the season, but amazing view of the Ansel Adams Wilderness can be found at the dam side of Duck Lake.
