Costas Iakovakis reviewed Alum Cave Trail to Mount LeConte

Wife and I did this today, just before the force of Alberto hit. Started at 10:00 sharp and arrived at Alum Cave is 43m, which seems quick. We were on a mission and had already seen everything last year, so no stops. We made it to the cliff tops is a total time of 2:13. Not bad for a couple of old goats. Spent 30m at the top and only got a quick glimpse of the majestic view before the mountains once again hid behind the fog.

The trails was mostly ours and a few other dedicated folks. The grip on the rocks is amazing. Even in the rain we had zero slips. We wanted to get back 30% faster, but alas, the beauty of the stream was our undoing. We uploaded our final time, 4:46, which excluded lunch at the lodge and time at the cliffs. Now, it’s off to refill the 4,600 calories we burned!! Best trail in TN, in my modest and humble opinion.

Costas Iakovakis reviewed Cravens House Loop Trail

Print out a map, take a pic at the trailhead with your phone, or keep the instructions close by. Great loop, but cutting across so many trails can be tricky! We got confused around Sunset Rock when looping for Cravens trail on the way back, but a local got us straightened out. Speaking of Sunset, views are amazing. Not a hard trail, per se, except the 6/10 mile on Gum Trail - straight uphill. Enjoy this great trail. Make sure you drive around at the top - nice homes to look at, if that’s your thing.

Deserves its reputation. Amazing. Wife and I loved it. Plan for 6-7h. Bad knees or ankles? Skip it until you’re healed. Rocks can be brutal...go counterclockwise on the second loop to make the back side easier. Eat your packed lunch at Werner Point - no people and I thought the views were the best there. You might not see it on a map, but it’s clearly marked on the trail. Enjoy!

Loved the history of it all, but the trail was just ok. Mostly under trees and wide. Bugs and mosquitos, as expected, for this tome of the year. Enjoyable day trip from Memphis.
