Very easy trail to hike. Perfect for a first timer or first hike of the season after having cabin fever. Even though it's a short hike you are rewarded with some decent views. Once at the top the trail can be followed further back to a waterfall. This hike can be done in a loop taking the orange trail up and I believe a blue trail down. Or vice versa.

Not a bad trail system, but if you've never been there before, print out a map. The trails wind in different directions and cross each other so many times it's easy to turned around. There is also a way to hike up the backside of Prospect Mountain from this trail system. I prefer going up Prospect that way rather than the straight up hike you do from the village.

Nice easy trail in town (through a couple towns). Nothing major as far as inclines. Easily accessible from many side streets.

While camping at Lake Harris in Newcomb, NY I decided to take one o the other campers with me on a hike up Mt. Adams...actually, he was the only one of 7 other campers that went. The night before, 3 other campers said they would go, but he was the only one who kept his word. When we started the hike we came to a small creek where a bridge used to be. Now there is a small detour where you have to cross shin-deep, slow-moving water. A little ways after that there is another bridge out, but there is a detour that makes you have to cross a smaller part of the water by stepping across a few rocks. Don't worry, you won't get wet at that crossing. Trail continues on at a generally flat grade until after the Ranger cabins. Then it gets pretty steep for the rest of the ascent. We had to use our hands to grab trees to pull ourselves up. There are even a few places where you have to scramble up bare rock for 25-30ft. When coming down the mountain you have to grab those same trees to help you step down. If you make it to the top there is no view from the ground, but if you are brave enough to climb to the top of the fire tower you will witness some of the best views in the High Peaks region without actually climbing a High Peak. Upon returning to the camp we told the others of our trek, and in unison most of them said, "Better you than me. I never would have made a hike like that!" With all the effort that went into the hike, it was definitely worth it.

Today a friend and I set out to hike the Lower Tongue Mountain loop. We started at Clay Meadow parking and headed up to 5th Peak. From there we worked our way south going up and down many times over many peak with AMAZING views. This was the best hike I've been on so far. There are only 3 significant peaks, but a few smaller ones in between each. Every peak and every side trail leads to more beautiful views each time. Some parts are a little tricky. We had to climb down steep rocky areas and slide down a few safely. Once we got to Montcalm Point we took the trail along the shore back. Anyone who hikes from Clay Meadow to the point then up and over the peaks better be in amazing shape. If you're in good shape hiking the route we took is well worth it. We started the hike at 9:30am and finished at 7:30pm. 14.07 miles in 10hrs4min

I love hiking this trail late May beginning of June. When you pull into the parking area there is a little pond filled with turtles and frogs. My first time hiking here the pond had thousands of tadpoles all along the bank and in the parking area where the water overflowed. Late spring and early summer months the beginning of the trail is like walking through a forest you would see in a movie. Tall pines and huge ferns all bright green lead the way to a wooden bridge. Shortly after the bridge the climb starts to become steep. The trail alternates between steep and flat stretches. As you get about 3/4 of the way to the top you'll start to see some steep cliffs. Be careful if you decide to explore the rocky areas because there are rattle snakes. I have not seen one yet, but I have seen pictures of them from fellow hikers. When I first hike the trail I got near the top and there was a trail going down and one that veers up a little to the left. There wasn't a trail sign, but I figured out that the trail to the left brings you to the summit and lean-to. The trail down leads you along the way to the next mountains if you decide to do the loop (which is 11-12 miles). As I created the summit there was a bald eagle circling above the great view. May be a challenging hike for beginners, but definitely worth the view.

If you don't take a good look at the trail map at the Rec center or find a good one online it is easy o find yourself hiking in the wrong direction. Being someone who doesn't mind a bushwhack got frustrate and just walked straight up a STEEP hill in the direction I needed I go. Eventually caught up with the right trail again.
Be sure you have a good map or GPS that will show you your final destination and starting point. I hiked out in the dark

Not a big fan of the hike from the village side. The trail is steep and rocky. I prefer to hike this from the Lake George Rec area. The trail is more gradual an offers better scenery along the way. One thing I would change about the summit is to remove the pine tree that blocks the view of the lake. I can't wait for that thing to fall down. It would make the view much better

One of two trails to the summit I have taken. I usually hike this from Shelving Rock Rd., but this side is a little more gradual at the beginning and steep at the end. The Shelving Rock side is more steep the whole way. Great views. Also, you can do some blueberry picking on the summit when they are in season. The summit is covered with them.
