Cindy Keller reviewed Stones River Battlefield Loop Trail

A site dedicated to a very bloody battle in the Civil War. There's a lot of trails with varying lengths, all seemed easy. Watch the film in the visitor center for some insight.
The NPS tried to save all the battlefield they could, but the sprawl of the town swallowed up a lot of it.

Cindy Keller reviewed Three Rivers Petroglyph Site Trail

We had so much fun looking for the petroglyphs! You don't have to look too hard. It's a mile up a hill. The trail is rocky, but we were going slow anyway looking at them. The trailhead offers generous parking. Flush toilets. There's a $5 charge to be paid at the office. National Park passes accepted.

Cindy Keller reviewed Fort Smith National Historic Site Loop Trail

This is in the Fort Smith National Historical Site, but you don't have to pay to walk the trail. It's pretty easy, with only slight inclines. It's also completely paved, so it's accessible.
There's information boards about the area & the river flows right alongside it. I recommend.

Cindy Keller reviewed Gila Cliff Dwellings Trail

It's a shame this trail's so short! It's beautiful. After you cross the bridge, you'll walk through a canyon by a creek. There's a couple of bridges to walk across. You get a photo op of the cliff dwellings, then a climb up to them. There's a ranger on duty to answer questions. After viewing the dwellings, you walk along the cliff. Then descend back to the bridge.

This was our favorite trail at White Sands. Some incline, but pretty easy. The gypsum is easier to walk on than regular sand.

Did the natural entrance trail. Lots of switchbacks & steep! Wanted to do the other loop, but since the elevators were out we had to walk back up the way we came. Very strenuous.
The cave is fabulous. We've been in a lot of caves. This is the first one they just turn you loose without a tour. We were able to set our own pace.

Scenic drive to the cave. The drive there is all uphill. It's all good until someone crosses the yellow line. Stay in your lane!

All we had time for was this easy, paved .9 there & back trail. It takes you to the Butterfield Stage site. Liked the history. Scenery is good.

Easy to find. A sign off Hwy 180 directs you to Arenas Valley Road. This road is paved for mile or so. When the pavement ends, you can see the parking lot for the trailhead. A generous lot for hikers/bikers & a separate lot for horses. Loved this trail! Scenic with mountains & desert. Easy trail until you start following the creek, then a little rocky. The petroglyphs were cool. Climb the trail into the rocks to see the dragonfly.

The best thing you can say about it - it's accessible. Very short walk through a garden of cacti.

Cindy Keller reviewed Dagger Flat Auto Trail

The road is graded gravel & we saw 3 cars coming out of it, so we took a chance. Besides some birds, we saw no other wildlife. Just the cacti. It was interesting to be among the cacti & be a part of the desert (if you can do that in a car).
After about 5 miles the road got really bad - huge washouts & potholes. A car pulling an RPOD passed us going out. We think they were actually camping back there! The campgrounds were full the night before.

Completely useless trail. There is NO view of the Rio Grande. The view is only ok. Put it last on your list.

A short walk in the desert. I hesitate to recommend it to families however, because there's a lot of cacti surrounding the trail. If you take your kids beware. This hike is at Dugout Wells picnic area & it's a neat place. We walked the paths in the oasis as well.

Not one of my favorites, but an ok trail. Good for families. You can't get into the canyon like the Santa Elena canyon trail. Also, you have to fend off a persistent Jesus "the singing Mexican".

Not a technically difficult hike, but easy is a relative term. There is an incline. It's paved concrete with some steps. Nice overlook at the top.

A ranger told my husband this was his favorite trail. Very easy to find. Just drive through the campground to site 18. park on the side of the road. I liked the small wetland you walk through & the hike around the hill was great too. Views of the Rio Grande & Mexico. Great family hike.
This was a popular place at sunset. Everyone camping there walks up the hill for a great view.

This is a great scenic road from Panther Junction. It's got lots of great hikes. A seasonal Visitor Center, a campground & store. The only crossing into Mexico in the park is here.
Saw roadrunners, coyote, rabbits & javelina!!

Paved & accessible, this is just a .3 loop to see the window. Has a bench & lots of information boards. Nice to see if you don't have the time or inclination to take the longer trail.

Cindy Keller reviewed Big Bend Hot Springs Trail

Easy trail. There's some historical buildings & some pictographs up on the side of a cliff. The hot spring is ...well not my cuppa. It had about 8 guys drinking beer in it. Just......no. Enjoyed the trail. It's good for families with small children. Just don't let them near that cesspool - oops - hot spring!
The drive there is nerve racking. The road is gravel & halfway there splits. You're driving on a narrow gravel one way road through a ravine until it comes together again. The parking lot is generous, but was full when we went on a late Sun afternoon in April.

Cindy Keller reviewed Grapevine Hills Trail

My husband's favorite hike. Easy mile in, then rough rocky incline to the balanced rock (about .2). Great views. The road getting there is challenging. Lots of ruts & washouts. Take you time & above all, don't try traveling the posted speed (25mph).
