There was a coating of ice on top of the snow which made for slippery conditions. Bring micro spikes or crampons. Once you make it to the hunters cabin(private property), look to the right and follow the blue paint blaze for Vly. There wasn't any views at the top but there were a couple of spots where you could see out through the trees. Once you make it back down, follow the snowmobile trail to the top of Bearpen. There was a pretty big clearing and lookout just past the summit. No canister on Bearpen.

The trail was hard to follow at times and was almost a bushwack. There are no views at the top or at any point leading to the top. the fire tower seems permanently closed. There was a mailbox close to the start of the trail but I am uncertain if that was the trail register for the tower or through trail.

Hiked this yesterday (4/28/18). The trail was very muddy for the first mile which wasn't bad. As you get higher in elevation the trail is covered with packed snow/ice so bring micro spikes. It started to rain on the way down and parts of the trail became waterlogged and at times it was like a waterfall. Had a great hike and enjoyed the rain!

The parking lot was like a frozen pond. all of the thick ice was covered by fresh snow so I didn't know until I tried to stop and kept going. Luckily I was able to carefully turn my car around and there was traction on the one side of the parking lot. The cell service is spotty so I don't know if I would have been able to call for a tow truck. The mountain was the same way. Some parts looked like a frozen waterfall(not a bad thing). I had ice spikes so it didn't slow me down. My dog had some trouble but it gave me a few laughs. Overall the hike was short but rewarding. The only downside was all the graffiti on the cabin and the tower. It's sad that people can't respect the property for other people to enjoy.
