Christopher Hurst reviewed Lake Katherine via Winsor Trail

Made an overnight loop going past Lake Katherine to Spirit Lake then merged back with the main trail. Forested section to Spirit Lake was boring, but not difficult at all. Going up Santa Fe Baldy is worth it.

Not a difficult bushwack up the hill to glades at 36.685899, -93.573374. Nice views, stayed the night up there. Tenkara fly fishing is not bad at the lake, caught one every couple of casts. Looking forward to exploring more glades here in the future.

The road from Truchas (639) was pretty rough. High clearance necessary and 4x4 helpful for that route. Trail was really nice, considerable downfall but no problems. Lake was great.

Did full loop in 1 night, 2 days. Plenty of great swimming and fishing holes. There are a few tough climbs, but some good views to keep motivated.

Best to take the route from highway 7, the road from Compton was very poor, saw cars and even suv's having to turn around. Trail also wasn't maintained as well as others in some parts, but still a great area. I ended up bushwhacking to the falls. Box canyon is a little bit slick on the way there. Cool cave about halfway through the loop.

Go all the way toward the end of the campground, in between two camps there is a little path going down to the creek. After the crossing, there should be a sign pointing to the falls. I would take the lesser worn trail going UP the hill rather than going straight which runs along the river. After that, trail isn't that bad at all.

Christopher Hurst reviewed Hercules Glades West Trailhead to Upper Pilot Knob

One of my favorite fall hikes. Some of the best views in the wilderness come from the Upper Pilot Knob. There's no trail, but follow the map and bushwhack up to the top. There's a fire ring and some stone benches. (36°42'05.2"N 92°55'34.6"W) Some pretty good views and fire rings on some of the glades, too. Not the best in the low water, wait till after heavy rains to go see the falls.

Started at the tower and went down the 'Tower Trail' till it came to Piney Creek. Flooding took out most of the trail, so just follow the creek like Dale said. Not many good views on the way down but there are a few nice campsites on the trails by the creek. The lake was beautiful, secluded. Took the 'Farm Track Trail' that follows the dry creek bed back up, one of the easier ways to get to the lake. The trailhead is down the road from the tower.
