This hike was great. Unfortunately for me a huge storm rolled in so I couldn’t see anything from the top and I got completely soaked coming down, but it was still great. I spent no time at the top because of the rain, so it took me 2.5 hours round trip. (I parked in the lot right by the trailhead and the distance from there was only 5.82 round trip.) I’m in fairly decent shape and even I would consider it a hard hike. It’s pretty constant up hill, but some of the views I did see were amazing. I’ll have to do this again on a nicer day. The only caution I have for this trail and rain is that if it comes down hard enough the trail becomes a river and it’s very slippery, so be careful!

I LOVE THIS HIKE!! This is seriously my new favorite place. It was so beautiful. Lots of meadows and trees. Red Castle itself is unreal and stands out super well amongst the other mountains around it. We dropped our packs in a site at the lower lake and hiked up to the upper really quick and it was so worth the extra few miles. I can't even describe how amazing it is there. There were bugs, but we planned ahead and sprayed all of our hiking clothes down with Permethrin and then right before stating the hike, we sprayed ourselves with Deet. We also brought mosquito nets just in case, but didn't need to use them because our preparedness kept the bugs at bay. I normally get eaten alive, but this time I walked out without any bug bites! As you get closer to the lake it gets pretty muddy, so be prepared for that. There were also some big-ish river crossings. Trekking poles can help with that. We did this in 2 days. 15 miles in (including the upper lake visit) and 10 miles out. Super flat, with only a few easy switch backs. This is a great beginners trip, for those that can do the mileage. Our bodies weren't sore by the end, but our feet sure were tired!

This is definitely, hands down my favorite hike. Done it a bunch of the years. Right now is especially beautiful. The wild flowers are amazing and there is SO MUCH GREEN!! You will not be disappointed. We camped up there last night and the bugs weren't bad. Definitely need bug spray though. This morning on the way out we saw 3 bull moose in a meadow near the lake. That was magical. I've never seen 3 moose together before!!

I love this trail. It’s weird because you almost have to walk up someone ms driveway to get to it, but it seems to be legal! It’s fairly steep, but really beautiful. Nice workout and the falls are amazing!

This was such a great hike! Lots of shade, so it’s a great evening hike, no matter the temp. The breeze off the creek also helps keep the temps lower. The falls were beautiful! I also loved all the mini waterfalls you could find along the way up. We went at about 6pm and no one was there. Got a bit crowded as we came back down...mostly around the rope swing. There were quite a few bugs. I got bit a few times by flies. The trail is pretty easy to follow...there is a short scramble near the beginning, but it’s not hard. I will definitely do this one again.

Please note that you need a high clearance vehicle to get to the trailhead. Luckily my friend did because there was NO WAY my Mazda 3 could have made it. It’s a very rough road. There is also construction right now on the neighborhood road leading to the dirt road. We had to ask some of the workers to move their vehicles so that we could get past them.

Loved this hike. It was pretty easy at the beginning. I did the first mile in under 30mins. Then it just got progressively harder. There were rocky sections off and on, which makes for a tough trail. It took me about 2 hours and 10 mins to get to the first lake and about an hour and 30 mins to hike back down. I clocked it as 3.7 miles from the parking lot bathrooms all the way up to where you see lake Blanche. It’s 4 miles if you make your way to the third lake.
I saw a deer, but sadly no moose. I brought bug spray, but never used it. I think if you are there early in the morning or in the evening you would probably need it, but late morning through the afternoon you should be fine without. I would consider the trail fairly exposed, depending on the time of day you go. I was in full sun most of the way down, which was around 2/3pm.
    Have fun out there!!

This was a nice trail. Some ups and downs, but mostly flat. I went on a slightly rainy Sunday morning and I never saw a soul, which was lovely. The leaves are beautiful on the hillside, but sadly you can see them much from the trail as most of it is fairly wooded. Would be a great hike for kids.

From the parking lot this is really only 3/4 mile. Lots of steps/stairs. Beautiful fall leaves and the waterfall is super cute. There is a part where you can scramble up the hillside and get a great view of the valley. Totally worth the short hike for the waterfalls and changing leaves.

I feel like I have kind of become a trail snob because I have gone on so many hikes this year that I am more picky than I normally would be, which is why I only gave it 3 stars. This trail is very steep. Pretty much straight up the hill side. You gain most of the elevation in the first 1/2 mile and it's also really rocky in places. That being said, since the steepness is a short distance it's not that bad. I saw a family with really little ones and they made it to the top. Although I wouldn't recommend taking really little ones as they could trip over the rocks and hurt themselves. I also think coming down is a bit dangerous in spots. I personally had to take fairly small steps and almost slid at one point because of the loose rocks and steep decent. The trail should have been made as switchbacks up the hill so that it was safer. The lake was nice and I bet the wildflowers would have been amazing a few weeks ago. When I got up there (labor day morning at about 9am) there were quite a few people...including yelling and screaming children, so I would recommend going early if you want to avoid the loud family crowds. I did the whole loop around the lake, which gets fairly overgrown. It was about 2.1 miles with that loop. Took me just over an hour.

The aspens at the beginning of this hike are so amazing! The rest of the hike is nice, but not all that exciting. The lake was a little lackluster to be honest. Still nice, but I don't think I would do this one again. There are others I like more. I gave this 4 stars because the trail is well maintained and there are signs everywhere, so you cannot get lost.
