Went on Sunday. Trail was in great shape, including the supposedly unmaintained rope section. A little crowded though; maybe 20-30 people on the mountain around midday.

Great way to see all the beauty Yellowstone has to offer, without all the crowds of tourists (after the trailhead). Along the way are hot springs, geysers, a waterfall, rivers, a lake, open plains, and forests. I went late in the afternoon when there were few people around and ran into a herd of buffalo.

Lots of wildlife traverse the area between the trailhead and the canyon—including bears. I saw both fresh and day-old bear tracks. Trail was almost empty; most people seem to take the route from the Bunsen trailhead.

Went around 3pm Sunday. Knee-high snow drifts in places. Allot more time than you think you need.

Slippery snow over ice on most of the trail made this surprisingly difficult. Might be easier if you wait until it warms up and melts some. Don’t forget to sign the hiker’s log at the top!

If walking along a slick path one misstep away from an untimely death gives you pause, then I recommend staying by the guardrails near the parking lot. If that doesn’t bother you, then you’ll love this trail for the incredible views. No skill required; just bring good shoes and have the mental/physical ability to be safe. It’s amazing how much better Yellowstone is even a quarter mile away from the tour groups.

Short route, good for if you’ve got less than an hour to kill.

Wish you could see it from the top, but you can’t

Crazy cool at the top; Lake Solitude is surrounded by snow and ice while the trailhead is warm. Speaking of ice, it gets icy at the top. Not sure how much time you’ve got before the trail gets snowed out.

Very easy elevation gain. You’ll need to take the alternate route around Jenny Lake, as the old trail route is still closed. Make sure to check out Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point on your way up.

Pretty overgrown, especially between 1/4-3/4 up. Great views though. Make sure you take a quick detour to the west side of the saddle right before the peak to see some awesome views.
