Chris O reviewed Kolekole Trail - Puu Hapapa via Honouliuli Contour Trail

There seems to be a lot of confusion about this trail. Really, it should be three trails in AllTrails: (1) Kolekole Trail, (2) Pu'u Hapapa, and (3) Pu'u Hapapa via Honouliuli Contour Trail. The first (1) is short and easy, good for the whole family, and leads to a park bench with a very nice view. Those looking for a little more adventure can head through the grass behind the bench to the right and follow the trail until it reaches a bend with some paperbark trees. Turn right there and climb steeply to the top of the hill. The ground is loose and crumbly, but the tree roots make good steps. Still ok for kids. There is a potentially slippery section just before the paperbark trees (nearly impossible if raining). This trail is what is currently mapped in AllTrails.

To continue from there to the top of Pu’u Hapapa (2), the trail becomes definitely hard, even treacherous, traversing and climbing the two notches, and then following the ridge to the top.

For a less dangerous, but still challenging climb, follow the contour trail past the paperbark trees, cross a stream, and continue along the trail until you reach a tree fallen across the trail with a still-growing vertical trunk. Turn right there, climb steeply, and follow the ridgeline to the top. Portions are loose and crumbly, heavily overgrown, narrow, and with steep drops on either side. The views are truly spectacular. This trail (3) matches the current description in AllTrails.
