Beautiful, easy stroll through the towering redwoods. Go early to avoid the crowds. And please be respectful of the peaceful serenity of the forest. Some folks are way too loud and it really takes away from the experience.

Cheryl Montanile reviewed Bear Gulch Day Use Area to Reservoir via Rim Trail

We hit the trail around 8:30 a.m.. Boy are we glad we did! Crowds were pouring in and temps were soaring as we were finishing up around 10:30. Nice, moderate climb - we forgot our poles but it wasn’t a problem. A few tight spots in the cave for my 6’4” ‘husky’ husband, but he made it. Glad we listened to other reviews and brought a flashlight! We added a bit to the hike by taking the Rim Trail to a portion of the High Peaks Trail... then backtracked back to Bear Gulch for a total of about 3.5 miles. SO glad we did because on the way back down we spotted two Condors... it was so exciting and definitely the highlight to a fun little hike!
One last thing... shortly after coming out of the cave, there is an unmarked ‘Y’ in the trail. We weren’t sure which way to go, so we gambled and went right. Fortunately that was correct and the reservoir wasn’t too far ahead. But they really need a marker there.

This is an easy, beautiful trail… A leisurely walk more than a hike. The only reason I didn’t give it five stars is because of the poison oak. Be prepared - wear long pants and closed shoes!! It is everywhere and very easy to brush up against if you aren’t paying attention - especially in the wooded parts of the trail.

Fairly easy hike but lots of rock scrambling. I was recovering from a broken foot which made it a little challenging. Poles recommended. Our dog loved cooling off in the creak after the climb. Pretty crowded on Friday, August 9. Go early!

Steady ascent for 2.5 miles with little shade. Beautiful mountain view’s. At the top, you are rewarded with cool shade and serenity of the forest and lakes. Lovely place to have lunch and cool off. A sign at the second lake indicated no lakes beyond the second one (Perhaps they were dried up for the summer). Regardless, we didn’t even try to find lakes 3-5. It would have required some bushwhacking and the likelihood of getting lost. Overall a great hike but take lots of water for that climb!

Stunningly beautiful, easy trail (except the 1/4 mile back up to the parking lot at the end. Save water and take your time!) Crystal turquoise waters to the right, towering trees to the left that provide just the right amount of shade. This trail is actually part of the Rubicon trail. I never saw a sign for the Emerald Bay Trail, nor did I see a sign where it ended, so I ended up going further (which was fine because it was a nice dirt path and the lake views and serenity of the forest were worth every step) Plenty of places to stop for a rest/snack along the way. I never even opened my hiking poles. Not overly crowded on Wednesday, August 14, 2019. This is perfect for beginners and children (again, with the exception of the ascent back to the parking lot). For this reason I recommend doing the side trail to Eagle Falls on the front end rather than at the end, as it’s also a little bit of a climb (not too bad). You will also see the Vikingsholm house on the way to the falls. Took me about 3 hours. But as mentioned, I went about a mile farther than expected, and added the detour to Eagle Falls (for a total of 8 miles)

Very enjoyable morning hike! Beautiful changing scenery that offers a great birds eye view of Lake Pleasant Regional Park. Pretty easy for regular hikers but perfect if you want to see the area, get some exercise and don’t have a lot of time.

So I guess it depends what you’re looking for. It’s a lovely drive through a forest with a pretty creek alongside much of the way. But somewhat of a disappointment considering the reviews. Way too crowded!! (At least in October) Bumper to bumper taillights is not my idea of enjoying nature. It’s also VERY narrow in sections, especially in our dually truck. At the Grotto waterfalls trailhead, people were parked SO haphazardly, I don’t think you could have put a golf ball between us and some of the cars. (If you hike to the falls, be prepared to share the experience with 100 of your closest friends) I would only recommend this scenic drive in the off-season.
