Cecily Coates reviewed The Grottos Trail

Embarrassing, but I was a little confused. I parked, crossed the bridge, and followed the trail over the bridge. Lots of fallen trees and it ended at the river across from the campground. I’m thinking you take a left once you cross the bridge. I did a rock scramble and ended up making it though. Very beautiful!

The Silverthorne area is so pretty! It was hard to pick just one trail. This trail was rated number 1 so I hiked it. I started at about 7:30 am and it was really peaceful! Such a beautiful spot with the river running through, the tall aspens, and of course a lake covered in lily pads. It’s definitely moderate and very scenic. You get a great view of the Dillon Reservoir as well.

Not the most scenic trail and it’s very hot and dry. The day is wonderful when the wild horses are out though.

Went on an emotional hike up Storm King mountain. It was beautiful, but eery at the same time. In 1994, there was a fire that claimed the lives of 14 brave firefighters. It’s a steep hike with 14 crosses surrounded by momentos from where the firefighters had passed. I was glad to reflect and do this hike in solitude. No snow currently or mud :)

Probably one of the coolest places that I’ve ever explored! You drive into an old ghost town where Thelma and Louise was filmed in the diner. There’s abandoned shops and houses. Then you drive past a few homes and keep going back until you reach the petroglyphs and pictographs. They’re creepily amazing! Past there is an old cemetery and store.

Stunning!! Go if you can! The road to get to the 5 mile hike is horrible! Have good clearance. We got stuck and had to get a tow. Otherwise it is one beautiful hike! You’ll want to spend the day there so bring a lunch, a camera, a hammock, a friend, and lots of water. :) enjoy!

You can only access this from Rampart Range road. I moved before I go the chance. :( it’s the only legal way after the fire. If anyone goes and see it please share with me :) thanks

So much easier to park now in a legal spot. You just have to know where to go. It’s such a beautiful and historic trail, but I agree that the homeless are ruining it. I saw drug deals, a toilet hanging off a tree with feces right on the trail, and they came over to tell me not to call the cops. Apparently they’re “taking good care of the area and causing no harm.” If it gets cleaned up I highly recommend this trail.

Beautiful trail! I saw where the waterfall was. It’s just been dry here with not a lot of rain. I need to go back with someone who knows the trail a little better. It’s hard to know if you’re on the trail at times or not. If you’re not a coordinated person, this trail is not for you. It’s very steep and there is a lot of rock scrambling hence the name “Rough”
