We parked at Government Camp, went up Alpine Trail to the left of the ski hill, and then continued up the trail towards Timberline Lodge. We were able to take a free shuttle down from the lodge back to the snowpark. Check times for shuttles, as we got lucky and caught the last one. There is also a shuttle that costs a few bucks that goes down to Sandy we were told. We did have to watch for skiers the last portion of the trail to the lodge but it was worth it. The trail overall was a bit steep in places.

The trail has a lot of downed trees and debris all over. I turned around at about 0.5 miles in due to crawling under/over so much stuff. There was a couple out who was working on cleaning debris as best they could. They mentioned they didn’t believe the Forest Service has been out here to assess yet.

Nice views of the ocean and rolling hills. I lost my footing a few times coming down on all of the loose rock but otherwise a nice hike.

Giving this 3 stars because I didn’t actually make it to the trail. When I was almost to the trailhead, per the map, there was a sign saying authorized vehicles only where it turned from paved to dirt road. I was surprised this wasn’t mentioned before.

Anyway, I’m not one to disregard signage and I drive and oversized camper van so that was potentially the last spot where I could turn around with enough space, and even that was really difficult. I did spot a baby bobcat crossing the toad on my way up and then of course horses, cows, deer, and other smaller wildlife. The drive was pleasant enough but I didn’t get a chance to hit the trail.

I got a late start so only did a portion of it. I would consider coming back and doing the full route if I lived in the area. I’d prob opt to trail run vs. utilize as a hike.

The drive to the trailhead is gorgeous. I only completed a portion of the trail because I arrived so late but it was windy, with wildlife all around, and beautiful views of the coast.
