    OUR PHYSICAL CONDITION, We have been hiking for about 6 years, both retired. I'm mid-66, husband a bit younger. :) We had not done a hike rated this strenuous in a while as I have a rotator cuff tear that I'm scheduled for surgery on. Right now, using a pole in that hand really bothers me. I used 2 poles this hike(recommended). We decided to give this a go and agreed we would only go as far as I could. We ended up going 3.5 miles (7 RT). Which is a bit past Linda Vista. My GPS to this point said the elevation gain was 2850 feet, with most of that in 2.5 miles. Linda Vista would be a good turn around point if you don't want to do the entire trail. Based on the distance we did, I can tell you this trail is more like 10 miles in/out. It is very doable, but don't get to cocky as those slippery places could make you bust your butt, at the least. There is a lot of rock hopping, which requires big, big steps if you are short like me. Always have 3 points of contact when stepping. The first mile or so of the trail is easy so that means you will do most of your ascent in the last 4 miles. There are a couple places it is easy to get off the trail, but if you do, it's easy enough to get back on with a little bushwacking. Overall, the trail is pretty well defined. Once you start climbing, the trail is fun, but a challenge. After mile 1, you won't get a reprieve until about mile 3 (just before Linda Vista) then it is easier, but only for about .2 miles, before the climb starts again. The descent will put a lot of strain on your joints especially the knees. Things that I feel are important: START EARLY (we started at 6:45 a.m.). WATER - we both used almost 3 liters. BOOTS, lug sole is best as some of the hike is on slick rock. FOOD, plenty of snacks and food. Blocks or some other electrolyte replacement. SUNSCREEN, if you start early, you will be shaded most of the way up, but if you don't, you will be in a lot of sun. MAP/GPS. TWEEZERS/FIRST AID, there are some cactus that crowd the trail and we picked out a few stickers. We took our time, as I could take no chance on falling. We did the 7 miles in 5 hours of actual hiking time, but 7 hours total with many stops for pictures, lunch, snacks and just to enjoy nature. TIME, allow plenty so you can enjoy the scenery. I really liked the hike, but was very grateful to hop in the hot tub after.

    We did this trail yesterday, starting at 6:56 a.m. I highly recommend starting early to stay out of heat and for the gorgeous sunrise you encounter on the drive out. Starting early also let us see 2 deer and 1 wild boar. The first decision is whether to go counter-clockwise (CCW) or clock-wise (CW). If you go CCW you will have a gentler ascent , but a rocky, steep decent. If you go CW you will climb steeply , but your desent will be gentler. Which ever works best for your body is what you should do. I think the moderate rating is accurate, mostly due to length, not due to tecnicality. For either direction, you will find the following helpful: long pants or zip-offs, good boots or trail shoes, poles, water, snacks, sunscreen. For the rest of this I will comment on the CCW direction as that is what we did. CCW, you have a gentle incline on ascent with a good trail, and great views. About 1/2 way through you get to the streams. Around the streams you encounter knee-high grass which often obscures the trail. I would not step blindly onto the path without using a pole to beat around checking for rattlers as they were out yesterday. We encountered one who alerted us of his discontent. Also KEEP YOUR DOG ON A LEASH so it does not get bit and just out of courtesy to others. Someone mentioned that this trail gets boring. We did not find that at all. Again about 4 miles in, the topography changes and you get more streams and a greater variety of vegetation, but that only last a little while then the awesome mountain views are back. This is also the same area where the grass has overgrown the trail so you need to be on vigilant snake alert. The cactus and ocotillo were all so pretty and lush. You will want your long pants here or you WILL end up with lots of scratches from the plants crowding the trail. The descent is steep and rocky so poles and good shoes/boots will be very helpful on the slippery scree. Going CCW, just remember to bear left. The trail is relatively easy to follow Sometimes you have to walk through a stream bed or cross a stream more than once to pick up the trail, watch for carins, but if you don't see them, just explore around close to the last known trail and you will spot it. Don't go off on a trail you aren't sure about without considering the options and using a little common sense. I'm not sure how people got so lost as some stated. We did use the All Trails app to confirm we were still on track a few times, but overall didn't think following the trail was hard. I feel the trail is a bit longer than stated, but unfortunatley forgot my watch so did not track it. My GPS said we had gone 324 miles...so apparently I forgot to reset that! LOL. My phone said 12.4 miles, but I know that isn't right. My hiking sense and the time said it felt more like 9 miles. We weren't trying to set any speed records, stopped for snacks a couple times, and took lots of pictures and we were on the trail about 5 1/2 hours.

    Hiked this yesterday with my 4 amigos. We were a group with varying degrees of fitness, but all hikers. First, take at least 3 L of H2O, it get's hot up there. It helps to drink some electrolytes beforehand or eat some blocks during. There is no shade! Start out with sunscreen on and re-apply liberally. We started at 8:30 a.m. and only averaged a mile or so per hour. I would recommend starting earlier if it is warm. When we finished it was 85 degrees! Too hot IMHO. I would NOT park at the abandoned tractor tires, I would go on down the road to the structure and park there. Go up on this side. For the first part of the trail, it is mostly way-finding. Once you get up past the first ridge, there is a bit of a trail and we built some cairns to help you out. Not so many cairns at the first part. I would recommend lug-soled boots and poles. The trail can be unkind in some places and you need good traction and support. Great work-out and nice views.

    First, let me clarify a couple of things you will find in other reviews. 1st there is NO fee at this trailhead and next there ARE potties at the trail head.

    We hiked this trail counter-clockwise. The views on the first part of the trail were nice, the last half was a bit underwhelming. I certainly would not rate this trail as hard. Maybe moderate due to length, but not due to elevation gain. We started on 104 the Lost Dutchman Trail then took a left at Black Mesa. We had waited until the "top" (mile 6) to have lunch. and there really isn't anywhere for that, so we continued until about mile 6.5 (counter-clockwise) and walked down to some nice rocks on the left in a little gully and had our lunch there. Can't say I'd be running back to do this one again.
