Carrie Alexandria reviewed Mule Deer Trail to John Frazer Cabin

Did this on Sunday. We were planning on doing the Raccoon Trail, but the road to that trailhead was closed. This was a pretty hike - Blue Grouse goes .7 miles to Mule Deer trail, and then you just follow signs to Frazer Meadow, where the cabin is. We were pretty cold and there was a good bit of snow. I was fine in boots, but my friends were in sneakers and were slipping a bit. It's a pretty easy trail and you get nice views along the way.

I had put off this hike for a long time because I knew it would be crowded and it's so short. I had family in town on Saturday and this is what they wanted to do, and I'm so glad we went! The hike up was short and easy (albeit slippery - would suggest boots). When you get up, it's beautiful - the water was frozen and people were walking on it. We saw some people skiing on part of the slope. Definitely don't stop at the glacier - you can get much better views without much more work by continuing on (so the pond is to your left). You don't have to go to the top to get great views - you can walk up just a few minutes. If you're feeling adventurous, climbing up the rocks in that area is a lot of fun too!

Did this yesterday (Friday) and LOVED it! Not many people on the trail at all. We found the trail a little confusing but figured it out in the end. Ended up keeping left on both loops going up and doing the other way down. This takes you the gradual way up to McNeil Point and we ended up going down the steep way. We agreed that we would have preferred climbing up the steep way over down- tough but it was pretty sketchy going down. If you go up the gradual way, don't feel like you need to wait until you get to the shelter to stop for views. We didn't sit in the shelter at all because it's enclosed so you miss much of the view. Wish we'd stopped to eat on one of the big rocks coming up!

Really nice view of Mt Hood over the lake but a large portion of the trail is closed. People have created a bit of another route off trail but it's not very clear.

We had a bit of trouble finding the trailhead because Waze took us to the wrong place, so we had to start driving back towards Breck until we had enough service to load a map and figure it out. When we got to the trailhead, we saw 2 moose while we were driving up! Started hiking at 8:30, and different members of our group of 7 summited between 10:45 and 11:35. Wasn't as crowded as I expected, but lots of people on the last bit near the top. LOTS of loose rock. Not so bad going up (although tiring) but it was a huge pain going down - I rolled my ankle (luckily nothing serious), another person fell, and there were a lot of close calls. Saw (and heard) lots of pikas, and we saw three mountain goats, all very close to the trail. 5/7 of us finished at 1:36, the last two followed 20 minutes later. They were doing construction on the trail at several points but you were just directed to walk through it and stay on trail - it felt like more of an inconvenience to the workers than to us.

This was my second 14er and I struggled a lot more on Bierstadt than this one, although I think that mainly just had to do with my reaction to altitude. Great hike, definitely worth it!

Nice trail - much of it is wooded and you get a lot of beautiful views of evergreens. Could have been better marked but we were able to figure it out! The waterfall mentioned in the description is nice but very small. It wasn't really crowded at all - we started a little after noon on a Sunday and didn't have any trouble parking.

Did this yesterday (Sunday) and it wasn't as crowded as I expected based on the other comments! We started at 9:50 and didn't have any trouble parking. We saw a lot more people coming down than up, so I was glad we'd started a little later and weren't doing it at the same time as everyone else! Quite a few people at the summit, but not too crowded. Saw lots of marmots. It took us a little less than 3 hours to summit, we spent 30-40 minutes at the top and finished at 2:00. Gorgeous hike!
