I loved this trail and looking forward to returning soon. The 3.1 mile loop is challenging in some parts because of elevation changes and steep rocky terrain, but the variety of trees, plants and views of the lake make it worth it. I did the trail solo and felt relatively safe. There is a sign-in sheet at the Deadening Alpine entrance. Trail is easy to follow and fall colors were amazing.

We trekked the trail Thanksgiving Day. It was an easy hike and just long enough to feel like we had walked off part of our huge lunch. Foliage colors were still vibrant and gorgeous along the trail and creek. We saw one mature black racer, lots of cardinals and small birds. At least 7 people were hiking and some of them had dogs, so it was busy. A beautiful view of the river is about halfway down the trail. You will see homes along certain parts of the trail, but it didn't bother us. The trail was very well marked and easy to follow.

Saturday in November is busy at the Gorge. But it sure was beautiful, despite the crowd. We had hoped to get a permit to hike the bottom trail, but due to "water releasing" today and tomorrow, the trail was closed and no hiking was allowed. I'm rating our visit three stars due to crowds, no access to the bottom trail (which is why we made the visit in the first place) and lack of notice that the best trail in the park was closed for the weekend.

The area is beautiful, although be warned, much of the hiking "trail" runs along the side of the road through the park. But there is a short loop that winds through some beautiful shady areas along the bank of the bayou. If you want to see an alligator, it's a great place to check out. Off of the fishing pier and over the marsh, you can also see a beautiful sunset.

Much of the natural land that the trail winds through is being restored. The website was great about setting expectations related to the work they are doing. The views were still pretty and the hike overall was pleasant. Since there are not many other trails in the area, I recommend the trek if you need a quick nature fix.
