This is a walk/hike on a largely newly paved truck road. The parking lot at the start indicates you need to pay to park. It is completely exposed with open golden grassland and few trees. There are numerous empty derelict lots scattered along the way, some of which were old missile bases. Towards the top is an open gate with a no trespassing sign, but a ranger said it was alright to proceed. At the top I spoke to some hunters that said you should ideally get permission to be on the land. The views of the mountains and valley are beautiful. On my way up I was passed by a train of cars going up to film a commercial. On the way down I was passed by several information technology trucks going up to I guess do maintenance/repairs at the radio and microwave towers at the top. All in all it was an easy walk but which gave a good cardio workout going up.

Beautiful straight forward no nonsense fairly easy hike in a canyon which was often shaded. My recording of this hike brought it to 9.2 miles. The start was a little tricky to find. The initial 1.5 or so miles criss crosses a dry river bed. In fact the trail is the dry river bed for some good stretches. There was a vague trickle of water at two crossings. I did however find myself wondering if this hike would be possible in the rainy season. I started out early and the weather was pleasant but it got quite hot by the last mile. Anybody know how this hike got it's name?

There are all manner of flying bugs that will test your love and patience with nature. But besides that this was not as enjoyable as it should have been. And that was not because of the heat, the thirst, the sweat, the big climb, the sketchy rocky trail at times - all these things I really enjoy the challenge thereof... but purely because of the rattle snake I saw and the increased likelihood of snakes at this time of year. I will do this again, but in the winter.

The falls are fantastic especially with water now flowing over it. It is well worth the hike even if it is extremely popular.
