Bruce Carroll reviewed Devils Garden Loop Trail with 7 Arches

Great hike. Lots of variety of arches. Lots of slickrock.

    Go early. Do it COUNTER-clockwise.

    VERY HARD.

I have climbed other hard 14's and this one is a match.

BEAUTIFUL and VARIED terrain and vistas all along the way.

It's actually a very pleasant hike to the saddle between Lindsey and Iron Nipple. Then the work begins!!!

To make the summit, the final approach is HARD and DANGEROUS no matter which route you take. The crux wall is serious business and the north face colour will just slide you down and down again---LOTS of very loose scree.

A great hike-climb but it will wear you out for sure.

See info on 14ers.com website for more.

NOT FOR NEWBIES. PLEASE BE SAFE.

For Topeka and NE KS---a very decent trail. The north "half" is paved; the south "half" is packed gravel and dirt. I imagine it would be very nice to bike it in the autumn during color change.

I would not consider it "Difficult" per se. Compared to other options in Kansas, yes perhaps it is difficult.

It is a very good Kansas hike. NO vistas b/c you're in the timber the entire time. But quite a bit of variety and enough ups and downs to keep it interesting enough.

Even though you don't need a pack, it's good to load up and get the training in.

A great hike. It's balanced----not one of those that is all uphill on the way in and all downhill on the way out. The ups and downs are physically and mentally great. Most of the hike is on a ridge so nice views on both sides.

The trailhead is on the left hand side of the Forest Service road---NOT on the right hand side like my GPS was telling me. There is a sign marking a horse trail on the right hand side of a mini-parking area. This is where the trail begins.

Hiked it on May 28, 2018.

What made it tough was I got here from Kansas yesterday evening and hiked it this morning. Not enough time to even quasi-adapt to altitude. All the same---a very good and do-able hike.

VERY IMPORTANT: Follow the AllTrails map closely. There are two places---especially one of the top where things flatten out---where the cairns are misleading and they took me astray adding some distance.

ALSO: There are at least two False Summits. So keep on going.

Best hike in the Park. We did it counter-clockwise which was a good call---also made it a harder hike.

Lots of arches on this one hike.

    Do it.

Right inside the main entrance. This is an easy stretch of the legs and especially a great intro for first timers to Arches NP. It has that "Mars" feeling for the newbie---especially if visited just after dawn or just before sunset. The shadowing and sky color make it surreal.

One of those Classics that everyone just HAS to do.

I would call it an easy hike. Get there early-ish if you want a photo of the arch by itself and w/o people.

Short and easy. Beautiful falls. Make it part of a full day of mini-hikes and plan on living wet.

Bruce Carroll reviewed Mills Lake, Black Lake, Frozen Lake Trail

    A nice and varied excursion.

Get an early start—preferably pre-dawn—-for three reasons: 1) Very limited parking so get there early to get a place; 2) Avoid the short-hikers going to Alberta Falls; 3) Dawn over Mills’ Lake is serene.

Lunch under the shade of the trees of Black Lake—it is deep, deep…that’s why it’s black in color from any distance.

    Easy hike overall.

If you start early, be mentally prepared for the mobs at Mills’ Lake and even more so at Alberta Falls as you return to your great parking spot.

    Bruce Carroll reviewed Chasm Lake

We were in Estes Park in mid-June and wanted an upclose of Long’s Peak. But without crampons and ice picks nor previous experience atop Long’s, we opted not to die but to do Chasm Lake instead. It was a decent step down hike.

A “moderate” difficulty ranking is appropriate. Nothing technical. It won’t leave you beat up.

As usual, very windy and gusty coming off the diamond of Long’s face.

Columbine Falls and Peacock Pool were beatiful and the pool appropriately named.

Dress in layers and get there early since it’s the same parking lot as Long’s!

This is a Very Hard, Very Rewarding hike-climb-scramble.

Be prepared for a very long day and a pre-dawn start if the weather is risky—-which it always is in the Rockies, right.

You will definitely want a walking stick or two mainly to help your knees on the return. A whole lot of descending and this can play havoc on the knees-quads-patellofemoral joint.

It is definitely one that I’d repeat.

    Bruce Carroll reviewed Hallett Peak

Get an early start for a couple of reasons: 1) To get a coveted parking spot! It will be swamped when you return; 2) To be at or above tree line at sunrise.

Very good hike and great views from the top. Don't the 9.2 miles fool you---you'll feel more beat up than a 9 mile hike.

    Well worth doing...and doing again.

Very nice hike with a great view over the lake from the top. We went in mid-June and the snow was waist-deep near the top. Lots of melt made it very, very muddy so plan accordingly depending time of year. Carry bear pepper spray!

Bruce Carroll reviewed Mystic Falls Trail and Fairy Creek- Little Firehole Loop

I have done this Mystic Falls loop three different times of the summer. Mid-to-late June is the best b/c the snow melt is awesome; the water is roaring; and there are small waterfalls that are very nice that are gone by mid-July and thereafter. Every time I go back to YNP, this hike is a Must. A repeat.

Bruce Carroll reviewed Sky Pond Trail

This is a Six Star (out of Five) Trek! As all things mountain, your experience will somewhat be weather dependent. Beautiful, glorious and all the other superlatives. Also, long enough and hard enough to make it physically and mentally rewarding for the intermediate hiker. Nothing technical though for the advanced. Well worth doing every time you are in RMNP.

Bruce Carroll reviewed Flattop Mountain Trail

Not technically tough but it's long enough and with enough gain to get beat down some. GET AN EARLY START to be sure of a parking place; it will fill up early. PRE-DAWN start if you can. As with all hike-climbs similar to this, it's a lot colder and windier on top so plan accordingly.

Easy hike. Great, wide trail. Nice views. Budget time for at the top; you will want to put the lookout center at the top to good use.

Bruce Carroll reviewed Guadalupe Peak Texas Highpoint Trail

I hiked this in Oct 2010. A good & rugged one. An early start is recommended to avoid the heat of the day. A walking stick will help ease the ache of the knees upon the return back down. Very nice views from the top.
