Brian Cutting reviewed Barney Lake Trail

This trail is by far one of my favorite places. Taking advantage of the unusually warm weather, I took my three boys up there yesterday. Just a few patches of snow on the trail, and yes, Barney is frozen over. It was a beautiful day. Ran into a few cross-country skiers wondering where the snow was. We need that snow for sure! I highly recommend continuing up the trail (tough climb) into Peeler Lake - a great place to camp.

Fantastic place to explore with the kiddos - the views out by Double O Arch are incredible.

Fantastic - one of a kind hike. I hike a bunch with my young children, but this one is not recommended for little'uns. I'd hold off till they can manage themselves on the chains and avoid the edges. Tremendous vistas though. Will do it again.

Steep trail, for sure... but well worth it. Some great views of Desolation, Tahoe and the Valley. The boys (10, 9, and 7) and I summmitted today. Take lots of water and a good hat, as shelter is scarce towards the top.

The hike itself is nothing spectacular, but the view of the mountain peaks of the park is unparalleled. On the way down, we hung a left onto the Elwha trail and wandered west for a mile... incredible flowers, grasslands, views... that trail blew my kids away - made an otherwise bland trail golden.

I hiked this on 6/16/17 overnight. There is still a tremendous amount of snow and ice on the ground. We encountered patchy snow from the back of Echo Lake, and about half way up the incline we went to crampons... it was 100% snow onward. Passable, but bring appropriate footwear and clothing, and a GPS, as the trail is not marked. Beautiful country!

Fantastic park, but it's not Yosemite for sure. Great local preserve.

I don't know that I'd call this one hard... its difficult in that there is little protection from the sun, but I would not classify this one as hard. Lassen - that one's hard. Four Mile Trail in Yosemite - hard. This one is just an uphill grade that goes forever. Did it with the kiddos today - great views clear out to Mt. Diablo, Pyramid, and Lassen. The trail lacks in excitement (it is, afterall, a fire road), but the views at the top are great.

Fantastic hike. Did this with my boys today (10, 9 and 6), and they rocked it. The waterfalls are amazing. The ladder was unexpected, but a fun twist for them. Windy! bring a windbreaker.

We made it quite a ways up Little Wildhorse, but had to turn back - water was about 3+ feet deep, and impossible to get around. Too cold to swim through. Amazing slot though... Incredible.

My boys (6, 8 and 9) completed this hike late in the summer - we camped overnight at Summit Lake the night before and hit the trail mid-morning. The hike was tough, as it is nothing more than a stack of switchbacks going up a 1:1 incline... A Ranger gave a brief history of the park, the volcano and associated volcanic activity at the top, including in his presentation photos and samples of various rocks found in the park. The kids really enjoyed the opportunity to learn. Views are great, trail is very exposed. Bring lots of water, a good wide brimmed hat and lots of sunscreen.

This is a great hike for families, and for individuals of all ages and abilities. If you are looking for a trail to get started with, if you want to get your kids interested in hiking, this is a great place to go. The path is well maintained, and is a boardwalk for much of the trail, so there is no tricky terrain. Great place to just let the kids run and enjoy the beauty all around. We completed this trail in about an hour.

If you are looking for a challenging trail, this is not for you. Great place to get kids motivated to do harder trails in more remote corners of the Sierras though.

My boys (10, 9 and 6) and I did this hike over the weekend. The recent rains brought water to the falls after a dry spell late this summer. Beautiful hike. Tough. Be prepared for lots of switchbacks, and various exposures to the sun - Some parts are heavily wooded, other parts are quite exposed. Also note that much of the trail gets dark early in the afternoon as it is in the shadow of the adjoining cliffs. Lots of people without adequate water and without proper clothing. Be sure to bring lots of water as there is no potable water along the way or at the top, as with other commercialized hikes in the park. Wonderful hike. Tough hike... great hike... we will do it again for sure.

I am giving this one four stars, because I personally thought the Four Mile trail to Glacier Point offered superior vistas of the park. If I had to choose between the two hikes, I'd be inclined to do four mile first.

The arch was a bit anticlimactic, but the scenery was quite unique. Love the red desert stone and landscape. We saw a Sonoran King Snake and a rather large Garter Snake, but otherwise uneventful trip.

I took my boys (6, 8 and 9) up and down yesterday. It's as advertised... Hard. But it's worth it. The views are stunning. Go early as parking is limited. We hit the trail at 7:30 and were protected from the sun the whole way up. Coming down... Different story. I felt bad for the folks coming up late in the day getting roasted. This hike is not for the faint of heart or Ill-prepared. We have been hiking all summer... So not bad, but we saw quite a few people struggling. Worth the pain. Boys loved it. Views of El Cap are amazing.

Brian Cutting reviewed Letchworth State Park Gorge Trail

The Letchworth Gorge trail is amazing. My brother, his wife and I took our eight kiddos and made it five miles around the loop (clockwise), only to find that the trail is CLOSED on the opposite side of the river, near the civil war fairgrounds. We ended up sending two adults back to go get the cars... So if you are planning on doing the full loop, fuggetaboutit. The trail is closed through 2018, due to railroad bridge construction above.

Great hike for young backpackers. Brought two of my kiddos (6 and 9) for an overnight stay - they rocked it in style. Beware that there is a river crossing (earlier in the season), so you might pack sandals... something we keep forgetting to do. Beautiful vistas of Mammoth along the way. The trailhead is a bear to get to, but the hike is great.

Great hike. The hike is purported to be 7.7 miles on this site... the map at the trailhead has it at 8.5, and my Delorme GPS tracked us at 9.2 miles today. You choose. Either way, gorgeous. Beware of mosquitos... as long as you keep moving, they leave you alone, but once you stop, you get swarmed. Lots of Poison Oak as well, but its well worth it. Just cover those legs up. Camp site is great.
