Nice hike, but it is not a hard trail as rated here. It's moderate at best and quite easy for a regular hiker.

A tough hike for the unsuspecting. Averaging a 13% grade for the main trail (Ohlone Wilderness), asthmatics and those out of shape need not apply. Horse Heaven trail is even steeper as it is shorter. It is much less travelled for good reason although it is also more scenic. I recommend it for the trek down unless you are game for punishment.
As others have said, crowds are crazy on weekends. Stanford Ave parking was packed when I arrived at 7:30am on a sunny spring Sunday. Lots of fearless cows (and cow pies), so if you bring a dog make sure they can handle close encounters.
It was beautiful in Spring but I can see this as a far less rewarding hike in the summer when its bone dry and brown.

We hike every spring at the Pinnacles and usually stick to the High Peaks as they never fail to impress. Said we'd climb Chalone one of these years and finally got around to it. It was easier than expected with a moderate but consistent incline from Bear Gulch. I have to say the near views along the trail are far less spectacular than High Peaks, but the distant views are unmatched, especially from the top where you get an awesome panorama of the park and the Salinas Valley. Note that you are much less likely to view condors along this trail and be wary of poison oak along the lower stretches.
Now that the trail is off my bucket list, would I do it again? Maybe, but I will probably be sticking to the High Peaks and North Wilderness for the foreseeable future.
