Brian Karnofsky reviewed Sugarloaf Reservoir Loop

The Alltrails directions bring you to an ample parking lot and picnic area. We were welcomed by two kangaroos, and saw another pair near the end of the loop. Since we are from the US, that was a big deal for us. We also saw lots of birds - one looked like a red parrot. The hike is mostly flat, with one somewhat steep hill. Amazing lake views. Trail is well marked, and as another reviewer mentioned, there's a spot near the end (if you go counterclockwise) that has tall grass and the marks are hard to find. In that case, keep along (and inside) the fence and the markings eventually reappear. A couple spots had quite a few flies and grasshoppers. We brought insect repellant, and that appeared to work well. We totaled just over 15 km. Temp was in the 20 - 22C range, and we needed about 1 liter of water per person. Only saw three people on the trail (and one person on a bike on the road near the dam). Signs indicate that no dogs are allowed, but we did see some dog poop along the way.

For a hiker from the US, Lane Cove Loop was breath taking. First, the sounds are amazing. Birds, frogs, and other creatures greet you and serenade you throughought the trail. We saw a wallaby, lots of cockatoos, iguanas, lizards, and a snake. I couldn't identify the type of snake, and it dissapeared in the bush before I could get a picture. It was brown, with a light stripe along both sides. The aprox 8-mile trail is shady, well marked, and on the easy side of moderate. Most of it is flat, with occasional boulders and brief/mild climbs. You'll find a couple campgrounds and restrooms along the way.

I do this 2 or 3 days a week. Usually arriving around dawn. Several regulars do the same, many bringing flashlights to get started early. First time, it was difficult for this 60+ guy. Now, I'd describe it as moderate for people that are in relatively good shape. Some run the whole loop. Very little shade. If you start after 10 am, bring a liter of water per person and some sun screen. Watch out for dog poop and an occassional rattle snake.

Wife and I have hiked this three times in the last year. Today (October 13, 2017) might be our last. There was so much horse manure and zillions of flies. Batting the flies away zaps your energy. Before starting, we sprayed ourselves with 40% DEET and reapplied several times, to no avail. The folks that bring horses should clean up after themselves. Earlier hikes on the same trail were beautiful, plenty of wildflowers, senic hills, valleys and spring (only) waterfalls. There were a couple other cars at the trailhead when we started (11 am), but none at all when we finished (2:00+ pm). As others have mentioned, trail is not well marked. Lots of side trails, but they do seem to eventually join the main trail. A few dead end at scenic points. Using the alltrails app will get you back to the trailhead. If it were not for the flies, I'd be back tomorrow.

Easy! Picturesque trail. Asphalt paved all the way. Under 10,000 steps.
