Brian Hughes reviewed Bear Den Geological Park & Trail

Nice little trail. Not well marked at all but fairly easy to follow. The rock formations about three quarters of a mile in are pretty awesome, and it's easy to see why it is called Bears Den. Saw a bear after hearing a crashing in the trees behind me and about 30 meters off the trail. It had been up a tree and when we were far enough away it crashed down through the branches and ambled off. No bother at all. Bring bear spray, though, just in case, especially in the fall when they are active trying to get fat for the winter. Or in the spring when they may have cubs or are trying to put on lost weight form the winter.

Brian Hughes reviewed Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway, Eliza Adams Gorge Walk

A wide, well maintained trail (a part of the Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway Trail) that allows two hikers to walk abreast with ease. Little elevation gain (300 ft at most). Howe dam is the start of the Liza-Adams Gorge and at that point there is a smaller trail that follows the gorge to another pond. Not a lot to see but it is a quiet and serene walk. The Spiltoir Shelter of the MSGT is on this trail as you head north from Route 101 (about 3/4 of a mile from 101). If you do the trail from Rt. 101 and add the gorge trail your distance is increased to about 3.8 miles.

Steep access road to a communications tower for the most part. About 8/10 of a mile up the steep road (did I mention that it was steep?) you hook off to the right onto a small trail for another quarter mile to table rock and the great view over the valley and Bellows Falls. Short but nice.

Very well maintained West Ridge Trail to summit is fairly easy. The South Ridge Trail is much steeper and less well maintained. Some nice views from West Ridge as you near the summit and 360 views from the rocky summit. Windy and cold today. Bring a jacket if you want to hang out on the summit for any length of time. There is a fire tower with a concrete footing so there is a wind break, but if it's crowded, the spot fills up quickly. SOuth Ridge trail is much more challenging but there are no views and its less well maintained and trafficked than the West Ridge Trail.

Great Trail with lots of sights along the way. Huge boulders, mushrooms galore, the Contoocook river, Beaver dams, waterfalls. Easy hike with minimal elevation.
