Busy to the first fall, take the kids and enjoy the view. If you continue up the trail you finds a few other smaller falls and a split in the trail, you can continue up battle and switch back all the way to the saddle of big baldy, or you can hit the right and go to Curley springs (eventually dry canyon), ad hit up the saddle from that side. There's a lot o water up this side, it's beautiful and fairly steep. Places for hammocks and tents all the way up. One of my favorites :)

Went up to summit Big Baldy. The trail starts steep, has a fairly mild mid section, and then really cranks up for the last mile or so to the fork. Don't plan on any available water so pack plenty. We hiked up at night under a full moon using no headlamps because it was so bright. Had no problems following the trail because it is so well marked and kept. About half a mile after the turn you can take for little baldy there is a great spot to hammok or set base camp for the short run to the summit (seriously like 0.5 miles from the fork) if you plan on overnighting. This spot has a three way split, one to the summit of big baldy (INCREDIBLE VIEW of the valley), one to the battle creek trail (which will loop all the way down to that trailhead), or back to the dry canyon trail which is what we did. My phone died after we set base, but after consolidation we totaled 7 miles (with a slight jog to quigly springs), and our descent time was 1 hour 10 minutes. There are many spots to pull out and set camp if you need, the trail is fairly steep overall. There were not a lot of bugs and no wildlife was seen except for a 4 foot snake on the summit in the morning sun. The meadows are super cool looking and the views are great. :)

Even though it's hard and sketchy!

The views are spectacular, the sense of accomplishment is phenomenal, and the wild flowers are beautiful. A truly amazing wonder, and if done right, one flipping incredible experience. :)

Important things to note about this trail
It is marked difficult for a reason!
There are two types of trail on this route: steep, and steeper. The first 3/4 mile or so is a pretty decent trail, but after that you are stepping on large rocks and boulders the entire rest of the way, footing is unsure at best, and unless you're careful you could easily hurt an ankle or knee.
As you ascend, there is a small creek about 1-1.5 miles in, FILL UP THERE! Unfortunately the spring was dry up at the meadow which smashed our plan of summiting after setting base camp. :(
There is a lot of foliage and the trails are quite narrow which makes utilizing your trekking poles hard, because they like to get caught up in the brush (but ABSOLUTELY take them!)
After about 3 miles you're almost to the saddle and an awesome clearing.
After traversing the rock slide there is another very steep, and quite "slippery" section, but as soon as you mount the ridge you literally Burst into a huge meadow, perfect for overnighting or setting base camp in prep. to summit. The best spot is just E by NE of the signs, follow a little game trail and you'll run right into a fire ring and a perfect level spot for a tent,
There is also a spring that, supposedly, runs down a rock face further north along the little trail, but after much searching we found nothing, and because of that were forced to close our journey prematurely.
It is a difficult trail, especially with all the weight in water you should take, considering there is nowhere after mile 1 to filter up. The terrain is very difficult because of the insane amount of large rocks on the trail the whole time, and its impressive incessant incline. There are very few "nice sections" of the trail, enjoy them while you can and don't take a beginner!
We woke at 1AM and descended.
Don't forget it gets very windy up there. Sudden rain does happen. Take. Trekking. Poles. Bring a ton if water (3L is not enough.)

I have hiked this at least six times now, but this most recent was my favorite. It is a very steep trail, but also quite short (almost exactly one mile each way), and so the payoff is big and quick. The trail is wide, well kept, and very clearly marked. During the day there is no shade and the trail is hot and immediately tiring, but its short and the view is wonderful, as well as the typical breeze at the top.
This last time, however, was at night. We took headlamps and started at like 11:00 PM (the parking lot was FULL) but we mostly ended up relying on the MASSIVE full moon for a good 2/3 of the hike. Once you get to the top the view is spectacular, we could have easily spend hours light-gazing if it were not for a team mate's poorly planned attire :P if you can, head up at night when it's cool, dark, and the reward is exponentially compounded :) check out my pictures of the view that awaits you!

Awesome Trail! You can shoot off East by North-East and head a couple miles into the falls (a breathtaking experience), or you can stick around the open ground and pack in a tent and some food for a really quick overnighter with a good view of the valley. As always, bring bug-spray, they were pretty hungry last time i was up there. =P

Bottom line: Fun. From the start its a pretty gradual assent and nothing to crazy until you hit the actual falls. A very quick hike with a rewarding payoff. Great to take out the kids and show them a good hike and some great scenery. The trail is heavily used so please! Leave no trace! And if you go, take up a wal-mart bag and maybe hike out 5 pieces of trash or something, let's keep this place nice for years to come. =)
