    Brandon Hill Pro-red@3x

    Bakersfield, California

I've done a lot of hiking in the past, but it was a pain with kids. Now that they are grown I have started again. so, I'm an experienced hiker who is out of shape. I live in Bakersfield, California so Mt. Pinos (Mcgill Trail) is my go-to because it is an hour away. Sequoia is only a little over two hours away, so I go there a lot as well.

It's not too long, kinda steep, and most of it is through town and a residential neighborhood. But for some reason, I really, really liked it. Ocean, downtown Ventura, a very well kept up neighborhood, that leads to a short dirt trail, and the best panorama view of Ventura you will ever see. As you're approaching the hill, look for the cross, that's where you are going.

Not a bad walk. Minimal elevation changes, it's as wide as an access road, so having to squeeze and losing the trail are not an issue. There are picnic tables at the end (in the sun), and one bench (in the shade mid-day). Pretty light blue lake, which you can see the whole way.

We went last week. Lots of vegetation, but the trail disappeared on us, and we didn't get to finish.

Beautiful hike along a beautiful stream in the beginning. It's all rocky at the end, but still easy.

We went up a couple of weeks ago, it was my first overnight backpacking trip in 30 years. The dirt road to the trailhead was really rutted up (doable in a Subaru Outback), but the trail was well worth it. We stayed at the middle lake and I caught two rainbows.

Sadness still abounds. But I'm not going to let the drought hamper my view of the trail, it was a fun on. It was a great view of Isabella pond, and will hopefully be a great view of the lake sometime soon. Be sure to stop and look at the old mine. It looks like a little jail door, but is now actually a bat sanctuary. There is a sign describing that, but it's pretty thrashed and hard to read.

This one is a jewel! We weren't expecting it to be in the real forest, and were very surprised by it. It's well marked and easy to follow, and there are brochures (there were actually some in there) that allow you to take a walking tour of the trail. It's and odd one though, as the peak is 3/4's of the way through instead of half, so although you're climbing for a while, it does end. Geocachers have a little surprise at the top, too. Should be great for snoeshowing, which will be our next stop there.

Nice trail, I think we missed a turn because it just kinda ended in a clearing. I have a new GPS, and will try again, because it is worth another try.

A very short walk, but well worth it. Go up to Tunnel View to get a good look at most of it (and everything else).

The main portion is actually a fire access road. Hope you like a lot of switchbacks that go on forever.
