We have wanted to do this one for quite a while but with all the hype over it I was a bit apprehensive. We hike all over island (Ka’au, Mt Olympus, Wiliwilinui, Hawaii Loa) list goes on and on. So a few days ago we decided to go for it and do peak 1. We knew we would probably end up doing peak 2 as well but I had no intention of attempting peak 3, at least not on my first go at it. Peak 1 wasn’t really that bad, yes it was a beast of an incline and has some rope at the top but all things considered it was okay. We did see a couple turn around and not even get to the top of peak 1 today. Once on 1 we decided to go to peak 2, peak 2 had considerably more Ridge, sheer drops and bouldering. Once on peak 2 we stopped and watched 5 guys go on and finish the 3rd peak. Conditions were dry and amazing for today, they couldn’t have been better. I would never do this one when it’s wet up there since it’s slick rock and sheer drop offs!! Use google maps and plug in “parking Olomana hiking trail” and it takes you right to where you want to park. DONT park on loop road. Walk back down the road you just parked on and around loop road to the right and that takes you to the trailhead (white Olomana sign on the left side of the road).

Such a good hike!! We did it today and it rained (not too hard) on and off the entire time. Parking is along the side of the residential road. Please don’t park in front of any mail boxes or driveways, be mindful of people that live here and walk quietly to the trail head. Trail begins at the dead end of the road at the “do not enter, Federal property” sign. Go around the left side of the fence and follow the main gravel/dirt/mud road all the way to the falls. Don’t venture off the road onto any tiny side trails, most of them are monitored by cameras and don’t lead to the Hanauma falls. There is a swimming hole at a clearing to the left about half way to the falls. People jump in but it is monitored by cameras as well. There is another set of smaller falls to the left of the large Hanauma falls, or at least there is when it’s raining like today. Such a nice easy hike!

I have done this hike many times. Most times I do the entire 8 miles. We hike the way out and run the way back. Today we just went to the picnic table and found the swing. It’s a nice hike, lots of sun so wear a hat and sunscreen. Bring plenty of water because you will get thirsty in the exposed sun of the switchbacks. It’s an easy/moderate hike that can and is used for trail running.

This is the 3rd time we have done this hike. I am recovering from a few running injuries but was still able to beast up and down this hike. It took us 2 hrs and 6 minutes to get up and down. We did sit and the top talking to some fellow hikers we met along the way as well. The stairs toward the top are eroding pretty badly compared to the last few times we did this hike but they were still manageable. One of the ropes was also cut off and left lying up on the trail... but no ropes are needed on this hike anyways in my opinion. Lots of stairs, a few ridges that were exposed and amazing views the entire time. One of our top 5!

We hiked the loop to the waterfalls. Nice easy loop, we trail ran it on the way out from the falls. Tons of parking and clean bathrooms.

Pretty good little hike. Short and sweet, but the scramble up at the top had me a bit tense due to some loose rocks but all was well. Park at the blowhole, walk the trail along the inside of the guard rail past eternity beach. The cross the highway and start heading up.

Such an amazing waterfall! And we were the only ones there.... probably because we were the only ones crazy enough to hike this thing. The reviews and description say that after the falls it’s pretty straight up the mountain to get back to the ridge, with mud and very loose footing... well that was an understatement for sure. It was literally back up the side of the mountain after following the stream for a while. Thank goodness we are quite fit and hiking smart. Super glad we did the whole loop but if I do this one again it will be straight out to the falls and back up the same way we came..

Such a nice little hike. Been looking to do this one for a long while and finally did it today. It was a nice day out and the trail was completely dry. Our car was fine on main road parking area, just don’t leave any valuables or anything in plain sight, just like anywhere else on island. The trailhead is the opening with 2 signs and the cement bench. There is currently a memorial there as well. It was a really quick hike but we could see how it could be a harder mess if it was wet. We did a bunch of exploring up top and could have spend more time.

This hike has been on my list for quite a while and we finally did it today! It was a bit overcast with significant wind but the trail was dry. We got there at 9am on a Thursday and we were the only ones up there until we started to head down. Trail head is easy to find, look for the danger sign in the bamboo tree line behind the bus parking at the lookout. Pass the sign and start heading up. There are many options along the trail to cut into the trees if you don’t want to walk the ridge. We walked a bit of the ridge and a bit in the trees on the way to the Puka and completely along the ridge on our way back down. It’s amazing views and as long as you watch where you are walking it’s safe. The Puka could be missed if you don’t know what to look for, we seen 1 woman up there that was lost an went right passed the Puka. When you come up to a large rock face, go down it and that is the Puka. The trail actually goes up over it and you can’t see it. Parking is $3.00 for tourists and free for residents and military. Nice, quick and slightly technical hike. We did the Puka and crouching lion in 1 day.

2.5 hours to complete for us. We trail ran the first part of it and again on the way out. We had to do it twice because the view was of a cloud our first time. There were raspberries up top to eat, yum! A few rope portions and stairs as well. Definitely moderately rated. One of my favorite hikes!
