Loved this hike. Had very low expectation going in, but was pleasantly surprised. We used it as one of our training hikes for Whitney. The twist for us is that we parked our car at Mt Wilson, then drove to the trailhead at Chantry Flats. Did it this way to save the knees on the downhill. The prior weekend we hiked up Icehouse Canyon to Cucomonga Peak and back and the knees were feeling pretty spent. Our route was Chantry Flats thru to Spruce Grove campground, then up to the top. 1st 3, or so, miles were gorgeous. The last 3, or so, miles were as strenuous as expected. Loved it...highly recommend it.

Really liked this hike. Very strenuous out of the gate, and just before summit. The views that opened up at the ridgeline as you ascend towards the summit was breathtaking. Panoramas of Mounts Dawson and Baldy, as well as, the valleys below didn't disappoint.

We like to do this hike midweek after work. Start at about 5pm hit the 5.1 mile loop clockwise through the canopy, down the lower post peak switchbacks, pausing at the opposite trailhead. We then pick up the Canyon View trail just to the right of the gate for an extra dose of activity and it keeps us from finishing the hike on a road. Total trip works out to about 6+ miles. 2.5 hours. I didn't put down the date we did this hike, because we hit it year round.

Nice hike. We do it midweek after work. Takes 2 to 3 hours in and out. Trail could use some work.

Mike Chalmers reviewed Whitney Canyon: Santa Clara Truck Trail (aka "The Beast")

Check out Jim's review below. Hit this trail at 5 in the pm on a Wednesday, so crowds were non-existent. A handful of mountain bikers were scurrying up and down. We were looking forward to this hike so we could dawn our headlamps and night hike on the decent. That experience did not disappoint. The transition from twilight to night was fantastic. The city lights of the Santa Clarita Valley were awesome. The trail details call this about 9 miles but we added an extra loop at the top to the Los Pinetos Saddle, making what we think was about an 11 mile RT. All in all the in and out took us about 5.5 hrs. See the photos.

I did this hike with Jim. Check out his review below for a real flavor of the loop we followed. The views were nice, but not as many ocean vistas as we were expecting. Sandstone formations are cool though. Check out my photos in the box above. One of the best parts of the hike was the post hike meal at Neptune's Net up the coast at the Los Angeles/Ventura County Line. Great clam chowder, steamed shell fish, excellent selection of brews.

Mike Chalmers reviewed O'melveny Park: Bee Canyon Trail

We shuttled a truck from East Canyon in Newhall and parked it at O'Melveny park. Returned to East Canyon, hiked that trail and picked up Bee Canyon at the top. From there we dropped down Bee Canyon to end at O'Melveny. Great straight through hike about 6 miles total. Gradual climb out of East Canyon with nice vistas of Santa Clarita. At the top go east on a fairly flat extended ridge. Oak canopy is beautiful. Fire road is interrupted in 2 places by Gas Co. property. Look for the single tracks (to the left) that skirt the perimeter of Gas Co. property. Then hike opens up at Bee Canyon to great vistas of San Fernando Valley. The descent into O'Melveny is anything but gradual. Trekking poles are a plus, but do get fumbled in the grasses lining the single track. Ending up on a fire road, paralleling a sweet creek and finishing at the gorgeous O'Melveny Park. We started at 5:30 in the afternoon and finished at 8:15pm.

A must do tourist attraction. The size of these Sequoias is amazing. 1 hour out of your day, at most, and well worth the stop. We made the stop on a Sunday morning in early spring. Snow was still on the ground and we had the trail, virtually, to ourselves.

About 12 miles past the King Canyon Nat'l Park Visitor Center on Hwy 180, park at the trailhead on the left side of the road. The downhill trail immediately switches to the right and passes underneath a beautiful oak canopy. The oaks don't last as the trail breaks into the open and the next mile is a series of long meandering switchbacks that ultimately drops to The Kings River. Vistas include the merge of the South and Middle forks of the Kings. We did the hike in early spring and the water volumes were spectacular. We stopped short of going to the base of the canyon. Our time was limited since we did the hike late in the day after the long drive in from Los Angeles. However, there was no shortage of a payoff--the falls from Tenmile Creek were amazing. We did the hike in late April, so snow melt was in full effect. Beware of rattlesnakes (no encounter for us), and poison oak (lots of it). Hike, in and out, took about 3 hours.
