Becca Stills reviewed Beech Bottom Trail (Closed)

This trail IS currently open - though trails around it are not. HOWEVER the road as of 09/30/2018 is impassable due to a large fallen tree about 2.2 miles away from the trailhead.

The road to Beech Bottom was impassable and so we ended up going here after reading some reviews. I could see why somebody would like this as a winter trail because the views through the trees are incredible but this trail needs some SERIOUS maintenance. We went over/under 28 downed trees. Everything is super overgrown and thorny! We left bruised and bleeding. Sometimes it’s hard to even find the trail. There are NO real campsites!!!!!

As others have mentioned, if you’re trying to get to the summit via hemp top trail you have about two more miles to go past the end point listed here. We pushed on to the top of the ridge hoping for views before we lost the trail/gave up and backtracked to a very provincial campsite in the middle of the trail - there is very little flat ground.

We saw one other person the entire time we were there and he seemed very surprised to see us. He dropped a hint about lots of wildlife and sure enough we saw/smelled fresh scat and noticed substantial hog rooting.

TLDR: Bottom line is this trail has a lot of potential but needs some work. No good, clear views. No water. No campsites. Very rugged. I would NOT recommend going alone.

Relatively easy hike in general but was rough this summer. There’s some large trees down in the first mile of Nubbins that makes it nearly impassable in some sections but clears up if you keep on. I saw a lot of muscadine grapes near the trailhead and there were tons of small daisies in bloom. If you’re doing this in summer, wear long pants because there’s A LOT of ticks (my dog who is on medication carried home 56 in his fur 濫). Also be aware there’s some active predators in this area- many piles of scat full of fur and even found a partial boar skull.

Aside from that it’s pretty steady but not steep elevation gain. Pretty water falls and reliable streams. Some folks have mentioned to me the trail is hard to find nearer to its end but imo it’s pretty easy to stay on as there is good signage. Like somebody else mentioned I typically do Nubbins to Odum Scout to the Pinhoti as an in and out- I think it’s like 7 miles total? There’s a huge campsite at the Pinhoti Scout intersection that’s great for large groups.

Becca Stills reviewed Appalachian Trail: Tesnatee Gap to Walesi Yi

Beautiful views closer to Tesnatee gap and three summit camp spots. Some solid uphill climbs that quickly even out so it's not difficult. Would have gotten a full five stars but as other hikers have noted, there's not a water. Two sources closer to tesnatee but pretty disappointing flow.
