My second IMBA Epic! I’m from Wisconsin, so the biking here was quite different from any I have done before. I loved it, though, and would do it again in a heart beat. The scenery was beautiful and the the obstacles (mostly granite slabs) were challenging, but not frustratingly so. I would highly recommend this particular trail and the entire trail system.

My first IMBA Epic trail and it was great! I tried it out on a fat bike during the summer months and it rode well throughout the trails. The system offers challenging obstacles and beautiful views. Sidewinder is often exposed, which makes it seem more difficult than it is. I would highly recommend this area and you could easily spend a day exploring all it has to offer

Fun and challenging intermediate-advanced trails. The trails were very well maintained and the obstacles were nicely built, offering challenging rock fields and some wooden obstacles. The trail loop itself was fairly short, but totally worthwhile if you want to go biking but live in the city!

Sugarloaf is a nice, short hike up, though with a heavy backpack it can become much tougher. Since they moved the trail, however, it’s less sandy and the dirt is packed to make a fairly easy hike. When you reach the top, the view of Winona is really something to see, especially when you look up and down the river valley.

We like to go climbing there in order to introduce beginners to outdoor rock climbing. There are a few non-technical routes with bolts and chains. However, you will have to lead up to the top-set, and although the lead isn’t difficult, you will definitely want someone experienced to climb with you.

Perfect for a fall bike, and it connects with other trails leading off toward other parts of the greater Twin Cities region, such as Stillwater. The trail is not difficult, but it does have a few steep pedestrian bridges. However, it is very nicely paved and well maintained throughout. After the main parking lot (about halfway through the trail), the scenery gets much better; the first half of the trail goes through neighborhoods and a couple golf courses.

This is a fun place to go viewing with friends and family members. If you go on the trail below the falls, there is a nice trail with wooden walkways over the marshy parts. The trail is quite easy, but the rolling falls and the river is beautiful for the entire hike.

Actually, my family and I did this trail on rollerblades, though I imagine it would be great for biking. The trail is nice, though hillier than one would expect Iowa to be, and it does not offer much shade coverage. If you go out on a hot day, bring lots of water. The fishery is a really interesting stop as you’re going along—I thought it was neat to see. Afterwards, have a nice meal in the downtown, and even stop by Luther College and take a quick tour about the beautiful campus.

Skating St. Mary’s is difficult but rewarding. The trails are well groomed and maintained and the variety of hill climbing, down hills, and flats is great, though challenging.

This is also a nice summer/fall hiking trail, though the mosquitos can be pretty nasty. It’s one that I come back to as much as I can.

It’s not a trail, but connects to the marsh lands trail behind the International Gardens. The loop around Riverside Park is beautiful, offering views of the river and the two blue bridges. Also, it’s right next to downtown La Crosse, so you have access to local favorites such as the Pearl ice cream shop!

I utilize this trail to bike from Onalaska to Trempealeau. However, it’s not a very exciting trail—it’s long, flat, and in the summer months there are so many mosquitos. Also, the miles are not marked from the trailhead, which makes it difficult to track progress for running. On the other hand, the trail goes by the river and the marshy lands alongside the train track, so the scenery is nice as long as you load up on bug spray (otherwise you’ll not be paying attention to any of the views).

I won’t knock the trail, though. It’s a good connection to places in between Onalaska and Trempealeau, such as Brice’s Prairie, which has nice road biking. It’s great for family biking because it’s wide and it’s a good place to get a run in. Also, the visitor’s center in downtown Onalaska was just remodeled and it is really nice.
