Nice long hike. You CAN get around the entire lake, but you need to detour and take some roads. From the trailhead moving north, continue along the well-maintained soft dirt track for about 2.5 miles, staying toward the left (where the lake should be). This dirt track will continue until about 3 miles and then turn into an asphalt single lane road to several cabins. Walk along this road until you reach a fork, down is a boat dock, up is a dead end. At the end of the boat dock you'll find a sign that reads 'trail not maintained for public use.' Go there. The trail is not maintained, but it's clear what's a trail and what's not. You'll encounter varied terrain, rocks, cliffs and really cool views of the lake. Continue along this trail, pass by a signpost for Mt. Talac, and keep the lake on your left until 4-5 miles when the trail spits you out at a posh family camp. Exit the camp and connect to Fallen Leaf Road by going left at the fire station. Finish the hike via this road. Be careful of cars. The entire hike was actually between 8-9 miles, no where near 11 as stated above. Happy hiking!
