Andrew Cartales reviewed Mink Lake Loop Trail

Awesome lake! Super pristine water and not a terrible climb to get there. We actually backpacked in with the intent of camping at Cliff Lake, but there wasn't a decent place close to the lake to camp, so we continued to Porky Lake and did Mink Lake as a day hike. Next time I'll skip Porky and head right to Mink Lake.

Decent climb to the top and a just okay view. There are betting hikes on the island, but if you're on the north shore this one is close to Kapaa, and easy to find. Parking is premium, so be prepared to park roadside!

My wife picked this one out. Little hidden gem right off Hwy 58. I wasn't sure what to expect, but we experienced lightly travelled trails with a few great viewpoints and waterfalls. We ran into only a few other hikers, and had a nice quiet outing. Great waterfalls!

Spectacular views for sure. Not particularly difficult other than a few narrow/technical sections. I took a group of hikers ranging from beginner to experienced adventurers, and only a couple of them experienced difficulty with the trail. A few nearly scrambling steep sections, with short areas of gently sloping reprieve between.

The weather was great, and the trail was dry. I would definitely not attempt this trail in the rain. The trail is nearly all dirt, and if wet, I'm certain would spell disaster. There aren't any real razor edges, but close and if slippery would not be worth the risk. I would only hike this trail when dry.

The views were spectacular, and I will add this trail to my must complete next time I'm on Kauai. One of my new favorite hikes for sure. The view at the end overlooks Kalalau Beach.

Nice gentle climb to Santiam Lake and a spectacular view of Three Fingered Jack. Having horse camped here with a buddy several years ago, I finally talked the whole family into day-hiking it. We made a quick stop at Duffy Lake on the way up. Next time we will backpack a few nights in the area.

Awesome hike! We elected to go up via the Mist Trail and return via the JMT to save some wear and tear on our knees. Having only been to Yosemite once before, and only having time to hike Yosemite Falls last year, we previewed the Vernal Fall and Nevada Fall during the day this time to see what we'd be in for when we started early in the AM before dawn. We started at 4:00 AM and took our time enjoying the trek - stopping at Little Yosemite on the way up and back to filter water. The weather was a perfect 79 degrees and virtually clear skies. We can't wait to go back and do this one again - the hike was long but rewarding and completely worth the effort. The cable route was not crowded, and people were very nice - considering our lives depended on it. The granite beneath the cables is a bit slippery, so be prepared and wear good shoes. Bring gloves for the cables. I was behind a fellow wearing worn out, unlaced Vans, and he struggled almost violently to the top. His descent was no prettier. Start early to avoid "tourists" walking the whopping .8 miles from the bus stop to the Vernal Fall footbridge for their selfies to prove they were there. Next time we hope to land wilderness permits and camp in Little Yosemite and summit Half Dome and Clouds Rest from there.

We hiked this from Necarney Creek and crossed 101 from Cape Falcon making this a 9 mile out and back. There were challenging sections on the west side of 101 but nothing too difficult. Once we headed up the trail east of 101, the trail was in the open where Oregon Coast underbrush took over. The first few switchbacks had the brush cut back, but the next few didn't. I don't even remotely enjoy hiking through brush over my head, having to swim through, so I considered turning back. I'm glad I didn't, because the trail opened up as soon as we got into the timber. The trial through the timber was typical coast trail - lots of tall trees, ferns and berry bushes. The trail was well trodden with a few trees fallen across. A good mix of steady grades with a few steep sections. The view from the top was pretty spectacular, overlooking Manzanita.

Good trail for a quick hike with a bit of difficulty. The trail is well-traveled and relatively easy fro the most part - there are some brief technical sections, but nothing too sticky. The climb is challenging, but not overly steep. We hiked while there was still a dab of snow on top, and cloud cover nixed our chances of enjoying a spectacular view, but that's how it goes. I will add this one to my list of training hikes.
